Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is large and spherical with a deep circumferential groove running around it, possibly to aid suspension. The entire surface is pitted which appears to be a purposeful form of decoration. The metal is a mid yellowish-grey colour and is worn. The weight is 39.3mm in diameter and weighs 322g. While the exact function of this object cannot be securely determined and the decorative nature is unusual the groove suggests that it was used as some form of suspension weight.

A complete lead weight or spindle whorl of uncertain date. The object is plano-convex with a flat base and domed top. A central perforation runs through the object and all surfaces appear undecorated. The metal has a light white/grey patina and is worn. The object is 24.9mm diameter, 9.6mm thick and weighs 30.2g. The perforation is 7mm in diameter. Walton Rogers (1997, p.1731) suggests Roman spindle whorls have a diameter of between 4-8mm while the diameter of Early-Medieval to medieval spindles is in the range of 9-11mm to fit the thicker spindles of this period. Lead objec…

A rolled strip of lead of uncertain date. The object is made from a single rectangular piece of metal which has been rolled into a tube form and appears undecorated. The object is 34.8mm long, 10.9mm in diameter and weighs 21.9g. During the Roman period production of curse tablets consisting of written curses on small sheets of lead which were then rolled and offered to the gods was a common practice. As stray finds, out of context and still rolled up it is difficult to say whether such rolled lead sheets are Roman curse tablets or just pieces of waste lead from some sort of manufa…
