A complete cast iron nail of uncertain date. The head of the nail is square in plan with a rectangular section. The stem has a square section and tapers towards a worn point. The stem is bent roughly half way along its length. Due to the lack of any diagnostic features and the loss of patination it is not possible to date this object any more closely. The metal is is a mid reddish-brown colour and is very worn. The nail is 21.8mm long, 10.8mm wide and weighs 2.2g. A similar example can be seen in SWYOR-828347.

Reported to the BMAPA/EH (protocol for reporting finds of archaeological interest) Metal blade The metal object appears to be a blade shaped iron object, measuring approximately 18cm in length. The tip of the blade appears to have been worn and is blunt and slightly asymmetrical in appearance. Photographs of the object were sent to Jörn Schuster (Archaeological Artefacts Specialist, Wessex Archaeology). Unfortunately Jörn was not able to provide a more detailed explanation without undertaking an in-hand examination of the blade. It has been noted tha…

An iron unidentified object of uncertain date. The object is L shaped in plan. One terminal has a crude knop, which then expands out towards a corner before extending forwards to form the second arm. The arm with the knop is D shaped in cross section, while the other arm is broadly lenticular in cross section. A short projection is situated on the outer edge of the upper arm, towards the corner. It is difficult to discern if the terminals end in breaks, but due to their uneven edges it is likely. The object is heavily corroded, with a brown-orange patina on the surface. The inner surf…

An incomplete iron knife of uncertain date. The knife is sub-triangular and the tang is on the same line as the cutting edge. The back of the blade is straight though much has been lost to worn breaks and corrosion. Dr Kevin Leahy, Finds Advisor for Early-Medieval metal work, comments that the tang on the same line as the cutting edge is an odd feature not paralleled in the works of Cowgill (Medieval), Goodall (Medieval), Manning (Roman) or Drinkall and Foreman (Early Medieval). The straight back to the knife suggests a likely Roman or Early-Medieval date for this object. The…
