Glass, white (i.e. clear, but with a greenish tint) Possible Vessel fragment. Melted glass, with an angular corner which might suggest this comes from the base of a vessel, or from the corner of a thick pane. As there is no iridescence, this may either be a fragment of Roman soda glass or glass of much later date, but is unlikely to be Medieval or Early Post-Medieval potash glass. It is also uncertain whether this may represent glassworking, or simply the incorporation of glass shards in a bonfire. Date: Unknown, from Roman to Modern, 40-2000. Thickness: 4.3mm, Weight: 2.82gms.

Turquoise tinted clear glass Vessel fragment. Shard from the mould blown edge of a possibly rectangular vessel.possibly with a curving rib raised in relief on one surface. Numerous tiny round bubbles are trapped in the metal. There is light crazing on one external surface but no trace of iridescence. This may either be Roman or recent, but is probably not Medieval, as the potash glass of that period was especially susceptible to decay. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Modern, 40-1900. Thickness (clear of surface irregularity): 5.5mm, Weight: 4.37gms

Copper alloy possible vessel fragment. Flat leaf-shaped fragment of cast sheet which has been hammered on one surface while held against another flat surface. This has produced a rippled effect on the beaten surface. It is possible that one curving and smooth edge is the original margin of a rounded plate, suggesting a possible diameter of circa 130mm, but the other edges are ragged fracture surfaces. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 43-1800. Length: 24.2mm, Width: 23.3mm, Thickness: 1.9mm, Weight: 4.58gms.

Copper alloy possible vessel fragment. A cast U-shaped lug of thickness 2.8mm decorated on one side with six ring and dot of diameter 3.5mm and a slashed edge. The ring and dot form an arc around a drilled hole of diameter 5.9mm through which passes a thick rivet with a burred end on the inner face of the lug and a large zoomorphic head on the outer. The latter is formed as a beast head with triangular ears and snout with a horizontal notch for mouth. Behind the ears, hair is indicated by incised strokes ascending from two convergent directions. The use of ring and dot might argue an e…

Lead vessel repair. Cast pot mend; a circular plug to mend a hole in a thin walled vessel; lightly patinated and also appearing lightly chewed, perhaps by vermin. The modest extent of patina might suggest a more recent date, while the tidy finish is more characteristic of the Roman period. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500. Pottery jar. Salmon pink to buff fabric with sparse tiny black and rare white inclusions and occasional voids, wheel thrown, with a concentric pattern on its flat base from striking off. The hardness of fabric suggests kiln firing. The vessel body is slightly bulbous and flat based. A slightly everted rim is externally thickened but is worn or otherwise indented at two nearly opposed points. Wallace Collyer of the North Lincolnshire Pottery Research Group examined this vessel and suggests an Early Medieval to Medieval date, c.1000-1300, principally from its form and apparently unglaze…
