An unidentified hooked object. The incomplete cast copper-alloy object has a circular shaft that bends forwards to a hook terminal. The shaft flattens and twists slightly as it meets the hooked end. The hooked terminal has an integral horizontal projection that ends with a sharp point. The top end of the shaft is incomplete but also flattens out. The surviving length of the object is 57.0mm, the diameter of the shaft is 3.8mm and the weight is 7.20g.

Copper alloy Weight, as identified by finder. A cast disc with lightly bevelled edge. The Roman numeral VI is neatly stamped into one face. This detail is considered as possibly Roman for some lead weights, which are described as bearing incuse numbers. It might be equally apt to a Post-Medieval or Modern object - the thickness is exactly 2mm, which might hint at its manufacture in correspondence to the metric system. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Modern, 40-1900. Diameter: 16.6mm, Thickness: 2.0mm, Weight: 2.90gms.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded tapered aperture of diameter 10-10.5mm, cf. Walton Rogers form A1, and with shrinkage lines suggesting manufacture in an open mould; patinated. The spindle hole size could point to an Anglo-Scandinavian date; however, the flattened rim distinguishes this from other whorls of this form, and might leave open the possibility of this being a copy or partial copy [i.e. using half of a biconical whorl as a master] of a later type. Reported along with two other whorls of probably early medieval date, though whether in close p…

Copper alloy possible vessel mount. A massy solid cast sub-rectangular object with a flat and slightly curving back bearing a deep [10mm] sub-rectangular rebate [13.3mm by 12.7mm], for its attachment to a slightly convex and lugged setting. The display side takes the form of a flat-topped human head with a square face framed by straight swept back hair whose strongly delineated lines are carried to a near-central parting. A long narrow straight flat nose is flanked by pelloidal eyes, the left more oval than the right, with a small [length 4mm] downturned slit representing either a mou…

Lead possible weight. Cast cylindrical weight with an off-centre moulded aperture of diameter 12.6mm; patinated overall. The form recalls that of spindle whorls of Walton Rogers form B, with an early medieval to medieval currency. The aperture size and position distinguish this object from other members of that object class. Weights of similar mass from London were considered to possibly respect a medieval Standard but none were perforated. This may have weighted a fishing line, or have been used for some other task. Suggested date: Unknown, 43-1800. Diameter: 26.5mm, Thickness: 13…

Lead possible weight. Cast weight with a moulded aperture of original diameter possibly c.9mm, distorted by partial melting; patinated. This might have begun life as a spindle whorl or conical fishing line weight; the latter is perhaps more likely given the apparently off-centre position of the hole. Lead ingot. Solidified lead melt which has set in a shallow circular hollow, or perhaps in the base of a vessel with a rounded base. The fine stippled appearance of the convex surface may suggesting a bed of fine sand. Ingots of this form probably represent the collection of small quantities of scrap as residue from the working of much larger quantities. A somewhat larger example from 10th-century Beverley was associated with an extensive layer of burnt casting sand probably arising from structural works on an early Minster (Foreman, M. 1991, 'The lead and lead alloy', in Armstrong et…

Stone rubber. An irregular cobble of fine grained tan coloured compacted sandstone, smoothed by water which has exposed natural bedding planes, and probably also by use-wear and handling. One end is flattened and the form of this stone lends itself to a grip between thumb and forefinger if the flat face were to be used. This belongs to a series of improvised rubbers and smoothers whose currency was probably catholic, but which are especially associated with contexts dated to between the Later Iron Age and the Early Medieval period. A range of uses, for example as kitchen or dyestuff m…

Copper alloy unidentified object. Possibly a lace end as kindly suggested by the finder. A short conical tube of sheet metal with an overlapping seam, smaller than the run of lace chapes, and splayed at its open end. Flattened. Roman rivets are also made in this form and the splayed end might alternatively point to this usage, as it seems unlikely to have arisen through use as a chape.
