CURATOR'S REPORT
An incomplete silver? Anglo-Saxon pommel of 'cocked hat' type.
Description of find
Part of an early medieval sword pommel, silver, parcel gilt. Large parts of the pommel seem to have got torn away in antiquity. The silver pommel is decorated with three parallel, gilt ridges framing its lower edge and with two gilt slashes on its side. Remains of gilding are also visible around the two rivet sleeves in which the side of the pommel terminates.
Discussion

An Anglo-Saxon silver strap-end with four rivet holes, one of them still containing a flat-headed silver rivet. The front of the strap-end is incised with geometric ornament and curvilinear scrollwork resembling floral fronds along the edges. No traces of inlay remain, but there may originally have been niello. The back of the object shows green corrosion traces and is very scratched around the upper rivet hole on the strap-end's body. The appearance of the scratches suggests that this is recent damage. Impressions …
