A silver Roman denarius of the Civil Wars, c.AD 68 (Reece period 3). PACI P R revese type depictign Clasped hands holding winged caduceus. This rare piece was struck between April and June AD 68 by Galba in Spain. Galba had agreed to join the revolt against Nero so started to strike coins. Some of the early coins did bear his name and portrait, but others looked back to the past. One issue bore the head of Augustus. This particular coin is copied from a Republican coin of L. A silver or perhaps silver plated coin of a silver denarius of Augustus dating to the period 18 BC to 16 BC (Reece Period 1). CAESARI AVGVSTO or SPQR reverse type depicting a triumphal quadriga r. surmounted by four miniature galloping horses. Spanish mint of Colonia Patricia. RIC I (rev.ed.), p.48, no.96 or 108a.
It is a brockage with the quadriga design being incuse on one side, probably due to another coin being stuck in the die during striking.
