A silver Roman coin; a denarius of the Republic (269BC - 30BC), Series 20 (119BC - 110BC). The moneyer signed the coin "Q METE" standing for Q Metellus. He is not easy to identify, but is believed to be a junior member of the Metelli family who were at the height of their power at the time. The coin is marked with an asterix; a monogram of XVI. This was added to denarii coins to show that they were worth 16 Asses. Previously they had been worth only 10 Asses. VENVS CAELESTIS, Venus standing left, holding apple and sceptre; star in right field. Probably Mint of Rome. RIC IV, pt 2, p. 48, no. 241. The obverse style might suggest this coin is Mint of Antioch (BMC V, pl. 91, no. 13), but probably Rome (BMC V, pl. 85, no. 19).

A silver Roman coin; a denarius of Hadrian (117 - 138), second consulship (118 - 119). The coin is in excellent condition and is hardly worn, though it has a few chips in the edge of the flan. Pax is shown on the reverse. The coin has a diameter of 19.5mm. The coin is sealed in a coin envelope so it's thickness and weight cannot be ascertained. For reference see Roman Imperial Coinage Volume II, number 44a.
