A complete lead alloy weight, probably from a net or line of unknown dating, probably Medieval to Modern in dating (AD 1200 - AD 1900). The weight is sub-cylindrical, with a central swelling. A single circular shaped hole is set off centre with an internal diameter of 6.3 mm. It measures 17.6 mm in length and has a diameter of 19.2 mm. It weighs 30.3 g (1.07 oz). It is a dark grey colour, with an uneven patina across the surface. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original sur…

This roughly conical, copper alloy object has a central hole and is most likely a weight of some description. The material and casting are crude and the age indeterminate. However, it is possibly Roman in origin.

This is a flat, cast lead weight which may be Roman to post medieval in origin. This face of artefact is moulded with three concentric circular ridges with a plain back. The surface is now heavily oxidised with some fritting of the material at the rim. Alternative interpretation, a token.

This copper alloy bullion weight is probably late, or post medieval in origin. The face or obverse side has a collared dog facing left surrounded within a plain border in high relief. The style of the dog is reminiscent of an English Setter and the breed origins go back to the 15th century when it was known to be a good 'bird dog'. The reverse is plain. Overall the object has a very good dark green bronze patina.

Here we have a very nice example of an Elizabethan trade weight. In this instance, the weight is for 1 ½ ounces. The device is clearly marked with the Royal cipher with a crown over 'EL' for Elizabeth I, a ewer being the London Founders Company and the sword of St Paul mark, indicative of the City of London Guildhall. The additional mark of a capital 'A', indicates that the weight is for avoirdupois, or the 16oz to the pound system. The marks are contained within a single circular groove adjacent to the rim of the weight. The overall patina is a very pleasant dark green.

A hefty lump of cast lead of unknown use but most likely a weight, probably dating from the post medieval but an earlier origin can not be ruled out. In form, it resembles wicker basket with a sub oval plan view and the rounded bottom with a central protruding 'handle'. The 'handle' has been drilled through to afford a fixing option. That 'handle section could be seen as the 'tenon' to form a joint with some other material/handle. As for use, it may be a weight; the lower face has numerous surface marks/dents that may indicate use as a form of pestle. It is now covered with the …

A cast lead weight of unusual form but probable post medieval origin. The form is that of a thimble and the pitting to the narrow topmost section is indicative of this having been cast within perhaps a copper alloy thimble. There are neither fixing points nor holes to suggest use other than as a simple weight. The diameter decreases to 12.8mm from 16.37mm. The surface has the typical pale cream patina further discoloured by the reddish soil adhered to the surface.

A complete cast lead weight, possibly post-medieval in date. The weight is broadly circular in plan, witha a rather uneven/incomplete rib towards the base of the weight around the circumference. The front of the weight is broadly flat with a series of concentric, pennanular grooves. The reverse is also broadly flat but undecorated, although there are a series of groves and depressions. These do not appear to be recent as they are covered by the same cream/light brown coloured matt surface as the rest of the weight. There has been some loss of material from a portion of the edge of the…

Cast copper alloy weight of post-medieval date (1625-1685). The weight is part of a larger group of stacking weights, having a wide and relatively thick raised edge on the upper face. The front and rear faces both have turned circles around a central hollow point; all of these concentric circles are regular and well formed. The front face is further marked with a series of stamps / stamped punch marks - including a crowned C (for Charles I (1625-1649) or Charles II (1660-1685); the dagger or sword of the London Guildhall; and a faint ewer (coffee pot) of the Worshipful Company of Foun…

Cast lead or lead alloy line weight of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD). The weight is sub-circular in plan. The central hole is broadly circular and has been cast / set slightly off centre. The diameter of the hole measures 4.3mm. A wide circumferential rib is present - making the profile an irregular bi-convex. The artefact is a mid-light grey cream colour with an even broken patina. It has also been abraded and rolled in the plough soil and the edges have been damaged. These weights are used for a long period of time and have multiple functions including holding down lines…

This is a post medieval cast copper alloy trade weight dating from Charles I or II (1625-1685). The piece now weighs 25.7 grams or 0.9 oz, given that the back is now heavily scarred /filed, it may have began life as a 1 oz weight. The top surface has the following verification marks:- 1. A ewer - The London Founders' Company mark 2. The sword of St Paul - the City of London Guildhall mark 3. Crown over ’C’ - the royal cipher - this mark is indistinct showing only the line at the bottom of what would be the crown. The weight has a mid to dark green patina with some edge chipp…

Lead weight of uncertain date, probably post medieval The weight is sub-circular and of trapezoidal section (with a diameter of 33.0mm – 34.4mm, a thickness of 7.1mm and a weight of 57.55g). The top face of the weight was decorated with a stamped design of uncertain form, possibly crude lettering with one of the figures resembling a letter ‘B’ or reversed ‘R’ The central mark is sub-triangular and contains a pellet. The surface of the lead is comparatively uncorroded, possibly suggesting a more recent date. The current weight of 57.55g equates to 2.030 ounces and s…

This cylindrical, lead weight may be medieval to post medieval in date. However, lead weights of this style, lacking as it does any decoration and with a simple, large central hole, are difficult to be precise about. In this instance, it is difficult to describe its use as it is much lighter then most ‘loom’ weights, perhaps being more akin to a small spindle weight.

A cast lead weight in the form of a flat base cone, possibly from a medieval to post medieval source. There is a small central hole that perhaps is indicative of this being fishing related. The surface has been cleaned and much of the original lead oxide has been removed since excavation, what remains is mottled cream with the grey lead original surface now visible.
