This rim sherd has the appearance and texture of the Roman period Severn Valley Ware. It has an external beaded rim and is reddish-orange with wheel thrown striations. The fabric contains fragments of black fine-grained rock (<1.0mm) and has flashes of mica and iron ore. Using a rim chart, the diameter of the pot would have been around 15 cm with the sherd representing about 14 % of the total rim.

A vessel rim sherd of Roman origin and typical of the oxidised Severn Valley Ware which was first produced in about 30AD, continuing in production until the 4th century. The sherd has the typical angular quartz up to 1mm and many holes where limestone or organic matter has burnt out. It has the typical reddish/pink surface and a pale grey reduced core.

Three sherds (2 un-diagnostic body sherds and a sherd from the base of a vessel) from relatively thin walled coarseware pottery ‘Severn Valley’ vessels. The sherds date to the Roman period (50 - 410), however, not enough survives to be certain of the form or size and without this a more specific date is difficult. The base sherd is a reduced grey colour, whilst the other two are an oxidised orange. The fabric on all three is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz, grit and ironstone inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand…

Rim sherd of a relatively thin walled coarseware pottery vessel. The sherd either dates to the Roman period (50 - 410) or the medieval period (1200-1500). From what remains it is more likely to be Roman in date and from the local ‘Severn Valley’ like wares, but the style of the rim is unusual being relatively thick and flared, rather than everted as in most Roman vessels. The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz, grit and ironstone inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. The fabric colour is a uniform mid ora…

Rim sherd from a probable Roman ‘Severn Valley Ware’ Vessel (50-400 AD). The sherd is heavily abraded and a fresh open section cannot be seen; therefore it is impossible to provide a description of the fabric. The pottery is a mid red brown colour; the outer surface is discoloured and abraded. The size and capacity of the vessel cannot be suggested from this sherd; it measures 23.8mm length, 25.7mm width is 10.8mm thick at the rim, and 3.8mm thick body. The sherd weighs 4.5 grams

A possible Roman cooking pan handle. A roughly rectangular piece of copper alloy, but with concave sides. There are 2 small rivets at one end and simple decoration in the form of a fine linear groove forming a border around the edge and across the 'neck' where it presumably joined the bowl. The item is dark green in colour where the original surface survives, however, there are several areas of bright green corrosion where the surface has been lost and the item has become pitted (Jeff Spencer, CPAT, January 2015).

Report by P V Webster: When found, the hoard was enclosed by a pottery vessel which was intact up to the top of the compacted coin mass. Above this, some fragments of pottery survived, but the vessel lacked its most diagnostic features, the neck and rim. The vessel is in an orange fabric with sparse inclusions of grit and what are probably clay pellets; the fabric appears to be one allied to Severn Valley Ware and is likely to be fairly local in origin. The pot swells out from a narrow base to a girth which is almost three times the basal diameter. Above this, the wall begins to curve …

"The two earthenware containers were found buried just below the surface. The upper parts of both vessels had been disturbed by the plough, and sherds from these scattered. Although it was possible to reconstruct both vessels to some extent, the only rim sherd to be collected came from the globular beaker. Circular impressions of the coins remain on the interior surface of both vessels. 1. Lower half of a storage jar in an orange fabric with a grey core. There are traces of exterior burnishing but most of this has been removed by over-zealous cleaning. This vessel is probably an examp…

"2. Most of a globular beaker in an orange-brown fabric with a thin buff core and a darker red-brown exterior slip, most of which has been removed after its discovery. Rouletted decoration covers the upper part of the body. This is a common form of the later third and fourth centuries, and is either a product of the Oxfordshire kilns or a related regional group." Probable Roman copper alloy jug lid of 1st to 4th century AD date The cast lid is fragmentary and with only a very short length of original edge surviving (with a surviving length of 36.7mm, a surviving width of 32.4mm and a weight of 16.0g). The plate lid is thinnest around the edge (with a thickness of 1.3mm) and has a cast raised circular boss (of 22.3mm diameter, where the lid has a thickness of 3.0mm – 3.5mm). At the centre of the circle is an integral circular-sectioned handle lug (10.1mm diameter at its base, 11.9mm high and with an overall depth of 14.9mm). The top face…

Roman copper alloy vessel handle from a jug, probably of 1st to 3rd century AD date The handle is fragmentary, missing the handle grip (with a surviving length of 37.0mm and a weight of 18.2g). The handle was originally fitted with a lid, hinged between twin open lugs on the upper part of the handle, now damaged (with a width of 11.1mm, an opening 4mm wide and a height of 7.2mm). Beneath the hinge are two curved arms, now damaged and truncated (with a surviving width of 23.9mm). The arms would have been soldered to the rim of the vessel (suggesting a rim diameter of approximately…

An incomplete cast copper alloy vessel foot of Roman date. The object is crudely pelta shaped, with a central triangular projection and flanking lobes on one edge, the other being convex. The object is covered by soil, with areas of corrosion disrupting the dark green patinated surface. One end of the object is broken, leading to a reduced length. Pelta shaped vessel feet are well documented, with many examples recorded on the PAS database (e.g. PUBLIC-749A73 and ESS-8C8A14), and excavated from Roman contexts such as in Caerleon (Brewer, 1986, pg. 173). They are believed to have…

This is a fragment of a post medieval Staffordshire slipware pot. The base material is a fine orange clay with small black inclusions. The interior has a single dark orange/light brown glaze and the exterior has a trailed mixed yellow and brown slip glaze. Using a rim chart, the base diameter was 90mm, it is therefore most likely to have been a cup or other type of drinking vessel.

An incomplete strap styled handle from a glazed earthenware vessel; not enough survives to indicate the form or overall size. It is most likely to date from the post medieval period (1600 - 1750). The handle is broadly sub rectangular in plan and cross section with a slight concave outer surface. Approximately ¼ of the handle survives. The fabric is a relatively hard fired earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular black grit and grog inclusions. The fabric is also mica rich. The colour of the fabric is a uniform mid orange red colour with the outer surfaces being glaz…

This fragment of copper alloy would appear to be a cooking pot leg or perhaps the fixed end of a skillet handle. It is crude in execution and has a broken edge to the end profile. It is now heavily pitted and corroded with a dark green patina to the surface.
