A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD1 - 1650), most probably later medieval (AD1150-1600). In plan the spindle whorl is sub-circular and in profile is bi-convex. There is a central sub-circular perforation which measures 8.51mm in diameter. The perforation is irregular in shape possibly due to wear. One face of the whorl has a raised circumferential rib. There is also the remains of raised ribs and possibly pellets as seen on other examples, such as (HESH-4FCB15) discovered in Cheshire East. Although the decoration on this example is now very w…

A complete lead alloy weight, probably from a net or line of unknown dating, probably Medieval to Modern in dating (AD 1200 - AD 1900). The weight is sub-cylindrical, with a central swelling. A single circular shaped hole is set off centre with an internal diameter of 6.3 mm. It measures 17.6 mm in length and has a diameter of 19.2 mm. It weighs 30.3 g (1.07 oz). It is a dark grey colour, with an uneven patina across the surface. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original sur…

Cast lead or lead alloy irregular spindle whorl or weight of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 – 1650 AD (. The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan. The central hole is broadly circular and has been cast / set slightly off centre. The diameter of the hole measures 7.3mm. The whorl measures 23.0mm diameter, is 5.1mm thick, and weighs 14.08 grams. The overall design of the upper and lower faces has been distorted by abrasion in the ploughsoil. It is possible that originally the whorl was decorated but this has been lost. The spindle whorl is a mid cream / white colour with an uneven…

This is a lead alloy spindle whorl and may be Roman to post medieval in date. Being lead, these objects will always throw up difficulties in dating. It is cast in the round with a moulding seam around the circumference and a large central hole.

A cast lead alloy spindle whorl or perhaps a weight, of indeterminate date. Possibly Roman but equally, it may be post medieval. The whorl/weight has an elliptical form and is undecorated. The central hole has a diameter of 5.5mm and the wear pattern appears to be off centre, giving credence to the weight theory, perhaps fishing associated. The surface has considerable scarring with a dull cream patina.

A cast lead alloy undecorated spindle whorl that is possibly Roman. Always difficult to date, spindle whorls appear right through to the post medieval, however, this whorl was found close to a single Roman coin and a second whorl of similar design and the characteristic 'deep' design may be indicative of Roman origin. The whorl has a convex bi-conical form and a central hole diameter of 7.25mm. The surface is now covered with a pale cream oxidation.

This is a simple lead alloy, bi-conical spindle whorl that may be from any period between the Roman and Post Medieval. Given the ubiquitous nature of these artefacts and the lack of any defining design on this piece, no further dating can be surmised. This object has a circumferential casting ridge and the bi-conical sides are slightly convex with no evidence of design. The central hole is 6.6mm in diameter. The surface is now greyish-white with the not uncommon lead corrosion.

A cast lead alloy head - possibly from a figurine - of Roman date 50 - 300 AD. The figurine is well cast but crude / rustic in nature - the exact function is unknown it is possibly part of a larger figurine although it does bear some similar characteristics to steelyard weights. In plan, profile and section the head is irregular - in broad terms it is an irregular cylinder - depicting a bearded head and terminating below the neck line. The face of the head is abraded and rolled and so some of the features are heavily distorted. The face has a heavy brow with the eyebrows projecting, …

This is an interesting lead-alloy Post Medieval personal object, most likely a pipe tamper. It takes the form of a smiling female figure in an erotic pose with her hands holding her skirt above her waist. The dress and head-dress are typical of the 16th century but the artefact is more likely to date to the 17th or 18th century. At some point in the distant past the figure has lost that part below the knees that would have served as the tamper. The artefact is a brown-grey colour with spots of light grey corrosion, where small areas of the surface have been lost mid-grey coloured me…

This lead alloy object of trapezoidal form has a hollow core and is probably a strap end. There is a notch on the reverse side to the topmost edge. The facing side is fashioned with a female head, perhaps of the goddess Diana the Roman goddess of hunting. Linked to this, on the reverse of the object there is a representation of mistletoe, this too has links to Diana and or the Greek Goddess, Artemis. The head appears to be wreathed. The iconography is suggestive of a hunting theme. The object is finely cast but the surface is in part corroded and pitted.

This lead alloy fragment has a suspension hole on one edge. The fragment is trapezoidal in shape, broken at the narrow end. The design has a central image within concentric circles and possible Fleur-de-lis in the upper corners. There is iron staining around the fixing/hanging hole and evidence of a black substance in the recessed areas. The back has a crudely incised name of ‘ANNETTA’ next to the suspension hole. An unidentified object of white metal, probably lead alloy, in the form of a human head bearing close resemblance to the character of Mr Punch or a clown. Pronounced nose and cheeks, a large, hooked chin and wide smiling mouth. The character wears a hat or cap with a broad border. The rear of the object is flat. The nose appears to have been squashed and there are signs of impact damage on both front and rear. The object is mostly a dark metallic grey colour, but with small patches of creamy white suggestive of oxidisation or paint (Jeff Spencer, CPAT, January 2015).
