Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A wrought iron spearhead of unknown date - most probably Roman (50 -300 AD) but could date from the Roman - Medieval periods (50-1450) The spearhead is irregular in shape being encased within iron corrosion - it has broken into two parts and the metal in section is also laminating - making the piece very fragile. The spearhead is best described as having a slender profile with a slight leaf shaped blade. Due to corrosion it is not possible to say whether the spear has a discernible mid rib as the cross section is too heavily distorted. The blade has a broken and blunted point. The …

Object type: STAFF WEAPON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Part of an iron staff weapon, or badge of rank, probably a cornet staff head. Similar to a large spearhead, with a rough, pitted surface. The socket is formed of two tongues of metal between which the wooden handle would have been held in place and secured with 2 rivets. The tip and cutting edges are blunt, or have been blunted in the past. The blade widens along its length from 15mm at the tip to 69mm at the base. The blade wings are bevelled to form a single mid-rib on either side of the blade. The blade shoulders (where they sweep from the maximum width to form the socket) are asymm…

Object type: PATTEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An oval iron patten, possibly dating from the 17th century although they continued in use in Montgomeryshire through the next 2 centuries up until the Second World War (Bailey, G. Iron Foot Pattens, Treasure Hunting, November 2009). This example has the remnants of one of its fixing brackets and just a small up stand of metal where the other bracket would have been. The artefact is now heavily corroded with considerable flaking to the surface.

Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
This is a cast iron Post Medieval cannon ball, perhaps from the 17th or 18th century. The ball is consistent with the size of cannon known as a Falcon. Although various weights and size tables can be found for the Falcon, this ball at 2 pounds and around 2.5 inches in diameter is consistent with the type. The ball has a clear cast line around the circumference and a casting spru is evident at 90 degrees to the casting line. The Falcon was a modest cannon, around six foot in length with a level range of around 200 yards. An interesting find when associated with its find location n…

Object type: HAMMER
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Published
Iron hammer head, with a circular eye (diameter 22mm) set within a slight expansion of the head. The striking face, which is slightly rounded and burred, is rectangular and is balanced by a sub-rectangular cross-pane, which is also slightly burred. Length 116.5mm, maximum width 45mm, maximum thickness 33.5mm, dimensions of striking head 34mm x 34mm, dimensions of cross-pane 28mm x 29mm. The hammer head is uncertain. The form of craftsmen's tools remained constant from the late, pre-Roman Iron Age through to the early twentieth century. Consequently, unless recovered from a demonstrably…

Object type: AXE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Published
Fragment of a probable iron axe, with an oval eye set within a notably wide expansion. Half of the eye, the poll and the end of the blade are missing. The front face of the surviving part of the blade is straight, while the rear, although initially straight, begins to curve back, presumably to form a wide cutting edge. Unfortunately, the loss of the front of the blade prevents confirmation of this suggestion. The thickness of the blade narrows towards the missing cutting edge suggesting that, when complete, the blade had a triangular longitudinal section. Surviving length 159mm, maximu…

Iron ball found in garden in grounds of Old County Gaol, Montgomery, near archway now converted into accommodation. Size conforms to shot for a 17th century falconette light cannon. Found well inside Battle of Montgomery possible bombardment area. HOWEVER, has an unusual rectangular casting mark, or the remains of a bar. It was found in an area of considerable disturbance and may be a broken fragment of a 19th century artefact, perhaps associated with the gaol.

Object type: HORSESHOE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Wrought iron horseshoe of probable post-medieval or modern date (1600-1800). The horseshoe is U shaped in plan with flared and enlarged terminals or heals; in cross section the shoe is sub-rectangular (rectangular with rounded corners. There is evidence of partial fullering on each branch of the shoe. Fullering is the creation of a U shaped groove through which the nail holes were punched. These grooves have been distorted by corrosion. It is possible that there are eight sub-rectangular nail holes (four on each side or branch) punched through fullered groves; this has again been dis…

Medieval iron spearhead, probably of 13th or 14th century date
The spearhead is near complete, missing only a small part of the socket base and has an overall length of 279mm. The socket is circular, becoming flat at the neck with an external diameter of 22.2mm (19.6mm internal). Slight damage near the base of the socket may have occurred around a single nail hole. The seam of the socket is open near the bottom and gradually converges, and is closed 75mm from the base. The socket has an internal depth of 91.5mm. The sides of the socket are straight and converge towards the blade. The …

Iron socketed arrowhead, possibly of medieval date
The arrowhead is near-complete, heavily-corroded and is comparatively large (with a length of 92.2mm and with a weight of 38.3g). The socket is circular and widest at the mouth (with a diameter of 16.4mm – 18.2mm and a thickness of 1.8mm). The sides of the socket are straight and convergent, reaching a minimum diameter (of 9.5mm x 12.8mm) beneath the blade. There no obvious attachment holes through the socket. The blade is of leaf-shaped form (51.2mm long and reaching a maximum width of 19.8mm) and appears to have had an oval s…
