Report by P V Webster: When found, the hoard was enclosed by a pottery vessel which was intact up to the top of the compacted coin mass. Above this, some fragments of pottery survived, but the vessel lacked its most diagnostic features, the neck and rim. The vessel is in an orange fabric with sparse inclusions of grit and what are probably clay pellets; the fabric appears to be one allied to Severn Valley Ware and is likely to be fairly local in origin. The pot swells out from a narrow base to a girth which is almost three times the basal diameter. Above this, the wall begins to curve …

"The two earthenware containers were found buried just below the surface. The upper parts of both vessels had been disturbed by the plough, and sherds from these scattered. Although it was possible to reconstruct both vessels to some extent, the only rim sherd to be collected came from the globular beaker. Circular impressions of the coins remain on the interior surface of both vessels. 1. Lower half of a storage jar in an orange fabric with a grey core. There are traces of exterior burnishing but most of this has been removed by over-zealous cleaning. This vessel is probably an examp…

"2. Most of a globular beaker in an orange-brown fabric with a thin buff core and a darker red-brown exterior slip, most of which has been removed after its discovery. Rouletted decoration covers the upper part of the body. This is a common form of the later third and fourth centuries, and is either a product of the Oxfordshire kilns or a related regional group." A fragment of a ceramic lightly fired stoneware vessel with copper alloy deposit, dating to the post medieval period (c.AD 1800-1900). The fragment is likely from a closed bottle and is made from a light, cream coloured clay. The interior is covered with blobs of copper / copper alloy. Dimensions: Length 35.4mm; width 29.5mm; thickness 3.9mm; weight 11.36g The fragment was initially considered as potentially from a crucible in which the copper material was melted in, however, the vessel is not high fired and would not sustain under the heat. Additionally, the curvature suggests the …
