A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD1 - 1650), most probably later medieval (AD1150-1600). In plan the spindle whorl is sub-circular and in profile is bi-convex. There is a central sub-circular perforation which measures 8.51mm in diameter. The perforation is irregular in shape possibly due to wear. One face of the whorl has a raised circumferential rib. There is also the remains of raised ribs and possibly pellets as seen on other examples, such as (HESH-4FCB15) discovered in Cheshire East. Although the decoration on this example is now very w…

A fragment from a cast copper alloy artefact. The artefact is rectangular in plan with a slightly curved profile and has a square shaped cross section. It is broken at one end and other terminates in a rounded point. There is no cast or incised surface decoration and the artefact has a thick green surface patina which is slightly corroded and abraded. The curve in the profile is due to recent movement in the ploughsoil. Lateral surface cracking is present due to stress fracturing. A direct parallel has not been found - it has been discovered on a site rich in Roman and Medieval archae…

An incomplete, snapped, cast copper-alloy pin of Roman date (50-300 AD). It is most likely that this is a hairpin; however, due to the fact that pins can be used for multiple tasks it is difficult to attribute function. The pin is broadly sub-rectangular in plan tapering from the 'turned' head to snapped break. It is cast in one-piece. The head of the pin is oval in shape with a lozenge (diamond) shaped boss on its upper edge. This boss is flanked by two curving grooves with two much smaller lozenge shaped pellets. The mid point of the head has a decorated cast circumferential serrate…

Cast copper alloy decorative mount, pin head or figurine, possibly from a copper alloy vessel, of Roman date (50-410 AD). The fragment is irregular in both plan and profile being a scaled model of a bird (probably a hawk or eagle). In shape the animal is zoomorphic - and stylised - in plan the bird is broadly triangular and oval in cross section. The underside of the bird has an integrally cast lug like projection which presumably would attach the bird to the rim of a vessel or mount it on a wooden box / casket. It is also possible that this is the snapped stem of a pin. The back of t…
