Stone spindle-whorl of uncertain date, Roman to early Post Medieval, c. 100 - 1700 The comparatively regular and circular spindle-whorl (of 34.9 - 35.8mm diameter and weighing 18.0g) is made from a coarse-grained, micaeous sandstone, now with polished surfaces. The spindle-whorl is of sub-rectangular section (7.9-8.4mm thick) with slightly flat faces. The perforation is central and is circular (5.0mm diameter) with straight parallel sides. There is little surviving evidence of decoration on the worn faces, although a single incised line bisecting one face is discernible and may be d…

Two conjoining fragments of copper alloy found in the vicinity of a Late Bronze Age socketed axe (CPAT-3C79F7). The fragment has right-angles between the unbroken faces, although there is the suggestion of a broken lip between two of the faces. It is now impossible to know what artefact type the fragment is from. The copper alloy has a deep brown patina suggesting some age to the piece.

A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD1 - 1650), most probably later medieval (AD1150-1600). In plan the spindle whorl is sub-circular and in profile is bi-convex. There is a central sub-circular perforation which measures 8.51mm in diameter. The perforation is irregular in shape possibly due to wear. One face of the whorl has a raised circumferential rib. There is also the remains of raised ribs and possibly pellets as seen on other examples, such as (HESH-4FCB15) discovered in Cheshire East. Although the decoration on this example is now very w…

A large, roughly triangular, flattish fragment of stone with a central hole. Probably a fragment of the upper stone of a rotary hand quern. A smaller hole on the outside edge is reminiscent of the socket for a wooden handle. Found in the Cwmddauddwr hills by the curator of Rhayader Museum in 1992. Only one photograph available for examination by CPAT staff - object confirmed as resembling a quern, but no grinding surface could be seen.

A fragment from a cast copper alloy artefact. The artefact is rectangular in plan with a slightly curved profile and has a square shaped cross section. It is broken at one end and other terminates in a rounded point. There is no cast or incised surface decoration and the artefact has a thick green surface patina which is slightly corroded and abraded. The curve in the profile is due to recent movement in the ploughsoil. Lateral surface cracking is present due to stress fracturing. A direct parallel has not been found - it has been discovered on a site rich in Roman and Medieval archae…
