This rim sherd has the appearance and texture of the Roman period Severn Valley Ware. It has an external beaded rim and is reddish-orange with wheel thrown striations. The fabric contains fragments of black fine-grained rock (<1.0mm) and has flashes of mica and iron ore. Using a rim chart, the diameter of the pot would have been around 15 cm with the sherd representing about 14 % of the total rim.

This is a lead spindlewhorl or weight of indeterminate date. It may be Roman but could also date from any period since. It is circular with a large central hole; unusually, the internal faces are not parallel but trapezoidal. This supports the idea that it is a spindlewhorl but the fact that the hole is not central complicates things. The shape of the hole appears to be deliberate rather than as a result of wear. The surface is considerably oxidised.

This is a fragment of a Roman silver denarius, probably of Septimius Severus (AD193-211). The Obverse has a bearded portrait of the emperor facing right. The reverse has a standing figure (probably Mars) facing left with a staff and laurel wreath. The coin is badly damaged with a section broken out from the lower right quadrant of the obverse and it may also have been clipped. It has a blundered legend on the reverse and so is probably a contemporary forgery.

This is a fragment of a Roman copper-alloy bow brooch, probably a dolphin or Polden Hill type of the 1st century AD. The foot, wings, catch-plate and pin are now missing leaving the head and the top part of the bow and possibly part of the axis bar for the spring or hinge. The bow is decorated on the upper section with three longitudinal ribs. The centre rib appears slightly raised and narrower than the 2 outer ribs, which may have been formed by inlaying a pale-coloured metal. Overall, the brooch has a pale green patination and is in poor condition.

A biconical cast lead spindle whorl or weight, of uncertain date. This undecorated example has a central hole with a diametre of 8.5mm and may date from Roman times to the medieval. There are no wear marks from a rope having passed through as in perhaps a net weight and given the reasonable size of the central hole, a spindle whorl seems probable.

An incomplete copper alloy Roman Trumpet (variant) brooch dating from 45 - 200AD. The bow of the brooch has an angular profile and an angular D shaped cross section. The bow tapers from a flared head to a break on the lower bow. It is highly decorated with cast and incised patterns. A fragment from the bow of a copper alloy Roman Trumpet brooch dating from 45 - 200AD. The fragment is sub-oval in plan and D shaped in cross section. It has a series of three cast sub circular (D-shaped) mouldings along the length. The central of these is relatively large and projects further than the others. This is a lead plano-convex spindle whorl or weight. It probably dates to between the Roman and Post Medieval periods. It is impossible to be precise as to the date or actual use but it is fairly typical of the whorls/weights of the times. This example is a tad crude, with no decoration. This is probably a fragment of a small, copper-alloy Headstud brooch of the 2nd century AD. The cross-section of the bow is a hollow 'D' shape. The wings are hollow with a broken, pierced lug at the centre to hold a spring mechanism or pin. There is also evidence of a chain-loop at the top of the brooch. This is a nice example of a Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 3. flat wing ends type, middle Severn Valley)t Midlands). Silver plated contemporary copy of a denarius of Faustina I (DIVA FAVSTINA), AVGVSTA, prototype struck at Rome, c. 141-50. RIC II c.f. 362 This little coin purports to be a genuine Roman silver denarius of Faustina the senior (Faustina I). It also carries the 'diva' inscription on the obverse, indicative of it having been struck after her death and deification in AD141.
