Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy ring, probably dating from the Late Iron Age to the late early-medieval period. The ring has bevelled edges and a broadly lozengiform cross section. There is some wear to one side, which may indicate where a strap or similar was secured. These objects are very difficult to date without contextual information however the form and patina suggest a late Iron Age to medieval date.

A cast copper-alloy ring probably of later prehistoric to early medieval date. The ring has worn bevelled edges and a broadly lozengiform cross section. There is some wear and corrosion of the metal, which could suggest a later prehistoric date (Bronze Age to Late Iron Age / Roman, c. 1200 BC to AD 409), but it could also date to the early medieval period (AD 409-1066) as these objects are very hard to date without contextual information.

The pin is approximately sub-square in cross section. Its widest end has a sub-square flattened edge that is 4.0mm wide by 4.1mm tall. The pin narrows evenly from this end down its entire length to a point (c.0.9mm diameter). The final sixth of the pin closest to the point is smoothly bent so that the point is at about 50 degrees. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy ring with hexagonal cross section and slightly uneven thickness and width of unknown date. The object is undecorated but has long striations around its outer face, probably from filing or wear. The ring had a diameter of 27.2mm and weighs 5.67 grams. The band is 5.1mm wide at its widest point and is 3.6mm thick. Such rings are largely undatable and can be as early as Iron Age, but it is most likely a Medieval to Post-Medieval horse harness ring, possibly to link two straps given how it is worn in two places.

A large piece of lead casting waste of unknown date. it is 78.6mm long, 46.6mm wide and weighs 132.58 grams. The object appears to be in the shape of a partial hand being made of of two side by side tubes with a roughly sub-oval cross section. Two depressions near each of the tips are not disimilar to finger nails. However the opposite side of this object is irregular and shows no sign of moulding similar the breaks do not suggest this was part of a larger more reggular object the object is therefore mostly likely piece of casting waste

A complete lead weight or counter of uncertain date. The object is cylindrical being circular in plan and rectangular in cross section shaped with rounded edges and very smooth grey surfaces. One of hse surfaces has pitting with two large but irregular hollows. The weight is 33.9mm in diameter, 5.3mm thick and weighs 39.4 grams. The plainness of this object make its purpose hard to identify. It is lacking a design which may argue against it being a token however, its weight is also irregular such that the former interpretation is more likely.

From that junction, a post extends at 45 degrees to the joint and terminated with a collar bead beneath a terminal ball. One leg of the object tapers to a broken fixing/attachment hole, the shorter leg in simply broken in antiquity with no discernible feature. The surface is plain with a rough mid-green patina.
