Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A heavily iron stained copper alloy unidentified object, possibly a brooch or fitting, possibly dating to the late Early-medieval period. The object is very unusual; the main body of the brooch is roughly circular in plan and is now encrusted with iron staining, but it was likely to have been formed of scrolled tendrils, interlaced, with openwork elements in between. On the reverse of the brooch are two integrally cast lugs set perpendicular to the brooch; it is assumed that a pin would have passed through these lugs to secure the brooch to the garment or possibly in the hair. The dec…

A wide gold finger ring which has a cast 'cut-out' design with inscribed detail. The design is framed by a strip border above and below decorated with vertical and oblique lines. The main part of the pattern consists of two erotic scenes or two depictions of the same event. A naked shaggy headed, bearded human-like male with a horse like tail crouches over the hind quarters of a donkey-like animal. The 'donkey' looks back at the 'man' who has his erect member pointing at the 'donkey's' rear it in one scene. In the other scene the man has entered the animal.
This ring has been examin…

A fragment of a copper-alloy unidentified object of uncertain date. The object is broadly circular in plan and convex. It is heavily damaged with part of the object missing and part folded over on itself. The obverse of the object is gilded and features a pattern of engraved circular bands. Within each band is a section of engraved geometric pattern. Traces of the engraved lines on the obverse are visible on the reverse of the object. In terms of shape and decorative style it closely resembles early medieval saucer brooches, however, the reverse does not bear any resemblance to a broo…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy mount of uncertain date and function. The mount has raised rib decoration and two openwork elements, with a flat reverse and a heel extending backwards from the front. This heel element brings to mind Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup mounts of the 11th century. If this is a stirrup mount the author cannot easily attribute this object to a specific type or class, and this identification is tentative.

Two pottery sherds of uncertain date. One sherd is of a hard, grey fabric with occasional small rounded quartz. The surface of the sherd has five grooves of decoration running across the sherd. Possibly Late Iron Age or Roman in date. The second sherd is crudely made and could be described more as fired clay than ceramic. One side of the sherd is broken which has revealed large imprints of straw or grass. Organic tempers may have been used however it is possible that this is an imprint rather than temper per se. Prehistoric or even Anglo-Saxon in date.

A folded strip of copper alloy, folded length-ways and tapering towards a terminal that appears to consist of two rounded lobes, folded underneath the object as if to create a type of hinge. The opposing terminal is simply squared off with a rivet hole close to the end. Close to the opposing narrow terminal on the reverse a copper loop has been passed through the strip. It is unclear what this object functioned as however lace chapes of the medieval period were formed in a similar way; the addition of the copper 'loop' and the presence of hinge lugs tends to negate this explination ho…

A complete copper alloy awl or leather working tool of uncertain date. The awl has a square-sectioned centre which tapers to a fine point at one end while the other end narrows into a flat chisel-like end. It is assumed that one of these ends would form a tang however either end would function well as a leather or possibly a woodworking tool. Most awls like this are dated to the Bronze Age however the form and function of awls changed little in 3000 years, therefore they could date to anywhere between the Bronze Age though to the medieval period. The patina on this example suggets a p…
