An incomplete cast copper-alloy late Roman artefact known as a 'nail-cleaner strap-end'; it could have been either or both. The object takes the form of a truncated pointed oval. It is flat and rectangular in cross-section. At one end is a pair of small crescent-shaped lugs, above which is a rectangular stub which has been broken. These crescentic lugs are characteristic of the main group within this object type (Eckardt with Crummy 2006, 87; fig. 3). Below the neck and lugs, the curve to the widest point is gradual, as is the curve to the terminal. The terminal is squared off with a…

A late Roman copper alloy ampulla-shaped strap end (c.300-400AD). The strap end is ampulla-shaped in plan, with a flared open end and an oval body that terminates in a globular projection. There are two ‘handles’ that connect the open end with the body. The body is decorated with a large ring and dot motif on each surface. The strap end curves slightly in profile but this may be due to damage.
Such strap ends are thought to date to …. Examples recorded on this database include SF-123771; RAH1497 and NARC-0EB5E5 and in the literature, Bishop and Coulston (2006:218-219) illu…

An incomplete cast copper alloy military 'amphora' type strap-end or belt terminal of the late Roman period. Only part of the main body survives which is flat and has convex sides. Above there are the remains of two side loops. The surface is decorated with a four lines of chevrons pointing out towards the cardinal points, from a central circular hole with sunray design radiating out from it. This hole may have held glass or a small stone. The chevrons divide the strap end into four quarters, with each quarter holding a double ring-and-dot design. The outside edge of the strap end is f…

Part of a Late Roman copper-alloy strap-end.
The surviving piece represents the top portion of an 'amphora-shaped' strap-end. The now-missing strap would have been contained within the gap between a pair of inverted-trapezoidal plates. These plates are linked together by a single copper-alloy rivet, located centrally, a short distance down from the horizontal top side. Beneath this socket the strap-end widens into the remains of a pair of loops, set side-by-side, separated by a central column. A 'V-shaped' arrangement of five ring-and-dot punchmarks decorates the upper surface of t…

A late Roman copper-alloy strap end of 'heart-shaped' form, with extensive file marks on the reverse. The attachment end is split and has a single rivet. The strap end is decorated on one side with five punched rings and dots, now worn.
The strap end dates to the later Roman Empire and falls into Simpson's 'Heart-shaped' group (Simpson 1967, p. 201, fig. 5. 'Strap-ends of this type are occur throughout the frontier regions of the later western empire, quite often in contexts which have yielded examples of the other classes of belt-equipment' (Ibid., 202).

An incomplete cast copper alloy strap end or harness fitting of Roman date. The end of the fitting has a globular terminal with a moulded collar separating the terminal from the main body of the fitting. The fitting is broadly rectangular in plan with a curved recessed plate extending back out to a squared end, where the fitting is broken and now bent. On the reverse of the fitting just above ther globular terminal is a tongue shaped flange to hold the strap; at the opposing end there was probably a rivet to secure it in place. Linear grooves and mouldings decorate the face of the fit…

A fragment from the attachment end of a copper-alloy late Roman artefact known as a 'nail-cleaner strap-end'; it could have been either or both. The fragment tapers from a flat attachment end to a waist with a pair of out-turned crescentic lugs back-to-back. This trapezoidal terminal is bevelled along its long edges on its front; bevelling continues around the lugs and beyond. The object has been broken directly below the lugs following old damage. Where the lugs meet the body of the object lines have been engraved for emphasis on the front. The reverse is flat and plain. There is a r…

A complete cast copper-alloy late Roman artefact known as a 'nail-cleaner strap-end'; it could have been either or both. The object takes the form of a truncated pointed oval. At one end is a pair of prominent crescent-shaped lugs, protruding from the centre of which is a rounded suspension loop at ninety degrees to the body of the artefact, as is typical of nail-cleaners. The loop is 2.45mm wide and 5.65mm thick. This compares to the main body of the artefact which is 1.8mm thick and flat in cross-section. The loop features a neat circular perforation for suspension. A cast copper alloy fragment of a chape or strap end of Roman date, probably relating to the Roman military. The mount has a heavy rectangular plate with a bulbous headed terminal extending at the base. The plate curves upwards on the underside and terminates with a triangular. The device has a hollow oblong form with a single ferrous stained rivet in the centre of the body. The lower corners each have a protruding knop and there is a central baluster protrusion, moulded onto the body with a chevron form. There may have been a loop projecting from this element that is now broken and m…

A probable incomplete cast copper alloy Roman strap end. The strap end has a narrowed neck and small shoulders which run into broadly parallel sides, with a strap split that runs almost the entire length of the surviving object. Linear and dot decoration and transverse scores across the neck section. There is a singular copper rivet through the head end. This may be a damaged example of a nail-cleaner strap-end, a category of artefact discussed by Eckardt and Crummy (2006), although if so it is a large example of the type. No exact parallel could be found for this piece which is proba…

An incomplete copper alloy 'amphora-shaped' strap end of Late Roman dating to c. AD 250 to 410. The strap end is in fair condition possibly missing the lower section or tip and some of the reverse plate, which may have been silvered. Just below the top end of the strap, the usual 'handles' of the amphora-type strap end are, in this case, open crescents. There is no other decoration. One rivet is retained in the head. This strap end may have had a nail cleaner terminal as the rounded terminal has slight bifid moulding but both back and front plates respect the terminal.

An incomplete sheet copper-alloy Roman heart-shaped strap end (Simpson, 1976, 201-2) dating to the late Roman period c. AD 350-410. The has two plates which both of which take the form of an inverted heart, flaring into a bifurcated terminal. Above this is a neck which widens into a trapezoidal upper section into which the strap would have been inserted and secured by the retained copper alloy rivet which passes through both plates. The surviving remains of the artefacts are a single sheet that is sub-rectangular in cross section with rounded narrow sides. Its's upper edge is marked by a transverse break( c.10.0mm wide) below which the body of the plate expands slightly (15.2mm wide) before then narrowing smoothy in a convex then concave curve to a minimum width of 4.1mm. A fragment of a copper-alloy late Roman (or possibly post-Roman, early early-medieval) amphora-shaped strap-end. Only the lower portion of the strap end survives such that it is missing the trapezoidal upper half and characteristic and handles.
The surviving fragment is aproximately oval in shape with an irregular break running diagonally across its upper end. The opposite lower present a more acute curve than the side angles, at the tip of which is a projecting domed knop. The main body is slightly concave although this may be cause from breaking. At the 'top' of the amphora are two oval apertures representing the handles and expanding neck with horizontal aperture to form the rim and top of the jug. Incomplete late Roman copper alloy strap end, c. AD 350-409. The strap end has two incomplete lozenge-shaped plates separated by a transverse neck with rectangular projections. No decoration is evident. There appears to be a rivet thought on of the plate - presumably to aid attachment to a strap, or possibly a repair. The strap end fits into a class of object associated with a late Roman date, often with military connections.

An incomplete cast copper alloy strap end of late Roman date (c. AD 350-409). Down the centre of the object is a repeating crescentic motifs either side of a vertical line, which divides the decoration into two panels. Each panel has similar decoration consisting of ring-and-dot motifs, singular and double, connecting by crudely incised lines to form running spirals. Either side of the running s…
