A cast copper alloy 3-dimensional bird mount, possibly for furniture or a vessel. The mount is in the form of a stylised bird with a long beak (now bent) and a long tail that widens at the tip into a rounded terminal. The bird's back and tail is decorated with deep hatching probably intended to represent feathers; the decoration on the tail spreads out from the back in cross hatching. There are two short (broken) stubs protruding outwards from the body beneath the bird's neck and these may be the remains of wings; underneath the bird are two legs, again broken. Behind the legs and dir…

A cast copper alloy mount of unknown age but dating from the late Iron Age to Roman period. One end of the mount is missing but it appears that it would have mirrored the two openwork circles that are extant; it was initially thought that this was a phallus mount but it does not appear so - it bears some similarities to middle and later Iron Age brooches but otherwise no comparison had been found in the available literature. There are no obvious mounting or attachment points on the reverse.

A cast copper alloy mount of unknown date. The mount is sub-triangular in plan and appears to be made from two sheets of copper alloy. The front of the mount has a raised sexfoil flower design in the centre but is otherwise plain. The reverse of the mount has a raised but hollow central boss, filled with a glassy substance, possibly a type of putty? This reverse projection appears to have snapped onto something, and may have been the primary attachment. There is one rivet or suspension hole drilled through the top point of the triangle, while what appear to be slight indentations (un-…

An incomplete cast copper alloy mount of uncertain date and function. The mount has raised rib decoration and two openwork elements, with a flat reverse and a heel extending backwards from the front. This heel element brings to mind Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup mounts of the 11th century. If this is a stirrup mount the author cannot easily attribute this object to a specific type or class, and this identification is tentative.

Copper alloy openwork mount, possibly a harness mount strap fastener of Roman date The mount is complete (with a length of 42.7mm and a weight of 6.0g) but would be of composite form with a bar to attach to corresponding keyhole part (not present). The terminal has a protruding sub-rectangular sectioned tongue above the raised bar (with a width of 14.8mm, a length of 4.6mm and with an overall depth of 4.7mm). The upper edge of the bar is convex while the lower edge is near flat. A further strip below the bar leads to the mount (1.4mm - 1.7mm thick), decorated with an undulating e…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy, conical mount of uncertain date. The mount has a circumferential flange around the base which probably had rivet hols in for attachment but these cannot be identified in the mount's condition. The peak of the dome has a sub-rectangular hole through it - possibly for a rivet (similar to those seen in post-medieval furniture mounts), or is may be damage. The mount has suffered some corrosion and although the patina suggests a Roman date, it could equally be of post-medieval date.

A complete but misshapen gold finger ring or circular fitting with a plain and simple hoop. There is no decoration either internally nor externally. The inside of the band is rough compared to the outside suggesting this may be a fitting for something like a cane or knife rather than a finger ring. The internal diameter of the ring is 21.8mm (max), width 5.2mm, thickness 0.9mm, weight 3.2 grams. The ring is probably of late medieval to modern date however its undiagnostic nature makes it impossible to securely date it to pre-1709. As such it falls outside the provisions of the Treasur…

A complete lead alloy mount / pommel cap / knob / handle of uncertain but possible Roman or medieval date. The mount has a broadly flat top with nine crudely faceted edges below. A second and third row of facets narrow down towards the thin end of the mount which has a circular aperture in the base, apparently for mounting upon something. Overall the mount is crudely made. The purpose is uncertain.

A cast copper alloy mount of uncertain use or date. The mount is disc-shaped in plan and the front is crudely decorated with multiple incised vertical and horizontal lines arranged to be akin to a cross crosslet-type design. On the reverse of the mount is a thick integral shank that may have fitted into a leather strap. There is also a short, C-sectioned projection from one edge of the reverse. This appears incomplete so it is uncertain what its purpose is, however it may be the remains of a hinge, possibly for a horse harness pendant, with the disc being the strap fitting mount. Su…

Object is a complete, copper alloy possible belt stud. The obverse of the stud depicts a crude face, two eyes, a linear shaped mouth and a wide nose are visible, a large headdress or messy hair sits upon the face. The reverse is slightly concave behind the face and a small hook like protrusion would have been used to attach to a belt or similar. The object has a dark grey and light green patina and is quite worn. Its exact date is unknown, but may possibly be Medieval - Post Medieval in date. The object weighs 2.3g, and is 17.04mm length, approx 13.29mm in  width, and approx …

A copper-alloy mount of probable Roman date. No parallel could be found for this piece; however, its form and method of fixing (see below) are similar to those on seen Early-Medieval hanging bowl escutcheons and it is suggested that this piece may have been attached to a similar type of vessel. The decoration content is paralleled by a series of 2nd century plate brooches (see, for example, Hattatt 2000: 345, no. 1041). The mount is circular in plan and has a slight curvature consistent with its proposed use. On the upper surface a combination of curved low ridges surrounded by rece…

A cast copper alloy terminal in the form of a three-dimensional ram's head, possibly a decorative fitting for an item of furniture, but possibly also a key. The terminal has deeply knurled horns that curl around small downturned ears that project from the side of the head; the tips of the horns also point slightly outwards. The eyes are worn but sit within a slight recess either side of the animal's head leading into the nose that extends down to the mouth; the lower jaw juts out slightly but no detail of the animal's mouth or nostrils is depicted. The underside of the animal is plain…

A copper-alloy mount of Roman date. No exact parallel could be found for this piece; however, its form is very similar to plate brooches of the 2nd century AD (see, for example, Hattatt, 2000, p. 353). The mount consists of a circular plate with four equally spaced peripheral lugs. The circular plate has a recessed ring around the outside and, at the centre, a raised ring with a central setting. This setting is filled with yellow enamel and traces of yellow enamel also remain within the recessed ring. Each of the four lugs is sub-circular and has a circular setting containing varyin…
