A cast lead alloy spindle whorl or lead weight. The whorl is plano-convex in cross section with a central sub-circular perforation from the top through to the base. Simple items like this have been used throughout the ages for a variety of tasks such as spindle whorls or fishing or goods weights. They have been used since the Roman period through to the modern periods. As this item is not from an archaeological context and is not decorated unfortunately it cannot be accurately dated but finds from the area suggest a Roman to medieval date.

A lead alloy weight with square central perforation for attachment to a shank. The weight is circular in plan and plano-convex in cross section, with an irregular groove around the perforation on the flat base. These objects are very hard to date and had a variety of uses, from spindle whorls to net and fishing weights. Probably medieval however they can date from c. AD 600-1600. Dimensions: diameter 19.10mm; thickness 7.14mm; weight 11.02g

An unusual lead alloy token of uncertain date. The token appears bifacial but one side (the reverse) being almost indescribable due to wear; the pattern is hard to decipher but could have gridded elements. Alternatively it may simply be marking from the manufacturing process and not a design at all. Also on this side is a thin score or shallow cut from across the token's diameter. A rounded pellet in the centre also has a thin score through it. It is unclear what these scores are for or why or how they were made. It is the obverse of this token that is of interest. It appears to depic…

An undatable conical lead weight with pierced flattened base and apex (probably Early-medieval to Post-Medieval, AD 450-1800). The weight is pierced from the apex through to the base. Lead weights are difficult to date when found out of context as their form does not differ much through time. There is the possibility that this is a gaming piece of early-medieval date, however again without contextual information or any disgnostic characteristics it is hard to tell.

A lead alloy disc, thin or flat in section, now bent and distorted. The disc had been folded up into quarters, and was opened by the finder. There is a sub-circular hole just off-centre, although it is unclear whether this is intentional or occurred as a result of being folded. There is no decoration or no markings on either face. The purpose and indeed the date of this object remains unknown although it is likely to date from the medieval or post-medieval periods; it may have been the beginnings of a whirligig or buzz-wheel toy, however this is just speculative.

A possible cast lead weight dating from Medieval to Post Medieval ( AD 1250-1800). The weightis sub-circular in plan and an uneven D-shape in prpfile, with five raised pellets on the front face. The reverse face is un-decorated. A parallel can be found in Biggs and Withers (2000) ref: 39. Biggs and Withers suggest that it was possible that round weights were used for weighing precious objects like coin and bullion.

A complete lead alloy spherical object, possibly a weight or sword pommel of uncertain date but probably medieval or post-medieval. The object is large and heavy with a D-shaped cross section and a central perforation that widens from 9.8mm to 16.7mm diameter. Within the hole there is evidence of iron - this bears some similarity with steelyeard weights but nothing quite like this example could be found; the hole may have been for the insertion of an iron sword tang. Suggested date: AD 1200-1700.
