Object type: HARNESS FITTING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy loop, possibly related to horse harnesses or cart fittings, such as a terret ring or reign guide. The loop is plain and undecorated but taper in thickness slightly from one surviving terminal to the other. This object is unlikely to be a bracelet because it has an oval cross section, differing to those of bracelets. Due to the object's fragmentary nature, assigning a specific date is not possible, although it is unlikely to date to the prehistoric periods.

A complete cast copper alloy double horse-head plate brooch, possibly Roman in date but potentially a modern creation. The brooch has a curved rectangular panel bar that curves downwards and is filled with yellow enamel. The terminals of the bar has three incised grooves within the copper that are reminiscent of an animal's paws. Projecting from the centre of the lower side of the curved bar is a short neck that leads into two opposing horse heads. The horse heads are depicted in profile and face outwards from the centre of the brooch. They are equidistant either side of the neck. The …

A large, roughly rectangular lump of bronze slag, airholes throughout and some elements of the raw copper sulphide are visible (a green-blue colour). The slag has a good deep green patina, similar to that seen on some local Bronze Age metalwork, so it may date from this period. If this lump of slag is indeed Bronze Age, it is interesting that it has survived and was not re-melted, as it is quite an amount of bronze.

Copper alloy bead or decorative fitting of uncertain date possibly Late Iron Age or Roman The bead is complete and is of globular form (with an external diameter of 23.1mm -24.4mm and a weight of 27.9g), with gently convex faces producing an oval section (with a thickness of 11.8mm). The sub-circular perforation (4.0mm - 4.9mm) is not central and is cast into the bead, rather than drilled. Both faces are decorated around the perforation; one side has an incised border, in which are incised radiating lines. The other face has an incised border, which is misplaced to produce a cresce…

A cast copper alloy 3-dimensional bird mount, possibly for furniture or a vessel. The mount is in the form of a stylised bird with a long beak (now bent) and a long tail that widens at the tip into a rounded terminal. The bird's back and tail is decorated with deep hatching probably intended to represent feathers; the decoration on the tail spreads out from the back in cross hatching. There are two short (broken) stubs protruding outwards from the body beneath the bird's neck and these may be the remains of wings; underneath the bird are two legs, again broken. Behind the legs and dir…

A cast copper alloy mount of unknown age but dating from the late Iron Age to Roman period. One end of the mount is missing but it appears that it would have mirrored the two openwork circles that are extant; it was initially thought that this was a phallus mount but it does not appear so - it bears some similarities to middle and later Iron Age brooches but otherwise no comparison had been found in the available literature. There are no obvious mounting or attachment points on the reverse.
