Object type: PENDANT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint pendant of possible Prehistoric date, though a more Modern date cannot be ruled out. The pendant is a drop-shaped nodule of flint with a perforation of diameter 4.14mm at the rounded end. The perforation appears to have been drilled through the flint, though some chipping is apparent around the edges of the perforation on one face. One face of the pendant is relatively flat while the other has a vertical medial ridge with faces rising to join it. The flint has only been roughly knapped on this latter face.

An amorphous glob of molten gold, now in two pieces that survives as evidence of goldworking of an uncertain date. The gold is very pure, with a slightly pitted surface of a solidified fluid. One end of the glob is larger and heavier with a long neck that has broken with a now separate almost fan-shaped terminal. The high purity, pitted surface and solidified fluid form confirms that this gold has been (re)worked rather than being an example of a naturally occurring nugget of gold ore. As the gold is undiagnostic and cannot be proven to be more than 300 years old, the object do…

A gold ring or hoop, damaged. The ring has been pinched so that it has a drop-shaped plan. The ring is circular in section, but with a narrow flattened face internally. The surface of the ring has small nicks and irregularities suggestive of a general lack of finishing after casting and damage sustained during its use prior to deposition. No hallmarks or other identifying features are visible.

A cast copper-alloy pendant of the Roman period. The pendant is a raised dome with a decorative border and a transverse perforated disc to act as a suspension loop. The dome is undecorated, but the base of the dome is circumvented by two borders, the inner one which is a simple, undecorated, raised ridge. The outer border is segmented by incised lines to proved a corded appearance. There is no decoration on the underside, and the object has a relatively even green patina.

A cast copper-alloy cruciform prick spur of the late Roman period, c. 300-410. The object is incomplete, with one arm missing. What remains is one shorter arm of trapezoidal section with a discoidal terminal, the centre of the body, with a discoidal projection, and the base of the 'swan neck'. Iron corrosion remains in place in the centre of the body, suggesting the location of the missing prick of the spur.

A cast copper alloy finger ring of probable Roman date. The hoop of the ring is rectangular in section, with a circular shape inside the hoop with 10 flattened sides on the outside. The ring is a Henig type IX form. This object came from a field that also had many 4th century nummi, making it probable that the ring is 4th century in its date of deposition, if not its production.
