Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Roman or Early Medieval copper-alloy finger ring, possibly created as a reuse of an earlier object. The ring consists of a flat band of metal which has been bent round to form a ring. The two ends of the band do not meet, leaving a small gap in the circle of the ring. One end of the band of metal tapers and curves to a pointed terminal but the other end is rather crudely cut off square across the band. This indicates that the band may originally have been longer and therefore part of a different object such as, for example, a narrow bangle. The band is decorated with an incised line ru…

Unworked piece of Jet. The piece is roughly trapezoid in plan and rectangular in cross-section. The edges and fractures are very worn and smooth suggesting that it has been a piece collected off the Lincolnshire coast, which lies only a few miles to the east. Although the piece is unworked the field in which it was discovered has also produced evidence for Roman occupation. Since Jet was used as a material for beads and bracelets it was thought best to record this piece incase more evidence arises.

This possible mount is sub-rectangular in plan and flat in side section. The artefact is decorated on the front only. The decoration consists of two (and a possible third) worn ring and dot designs with one at each end of the artefact. The concentric rings appear to be very worn, although the central dot (diameter of dot: 1.5mm) on each design is clearly visible. The central platform between these designs is de…

A slightly incomplete cast copper alloy mount, from a box or item of furniture, with iron remains, dating to the Roman period, between AD 43 - 410 (length: 19.5mm; diameter: 29mm; weight: 45.4g). The mount is circular in plan and conical (or bun-shaped) in cross section. At the top of the mount, there is a slightly incomplete central circular protruding knob. There is no other decoration on this artefact. The base/ underside of the mount is flat and is mostly covered with a substantial amount of iron corrosion, suggesting the remains of a probable iron attachment fitting or rivet…

A copper alloy probable mount which is probably Roman. The mount is a flat plate (now bent) shaped like a triangle with a semi-circular wide end. From middle of the curved side of the semi-circle a convex shaft projects. It is 44.7mm long, 19.2mm wide and 1.9mm thick. There are two circular holes through the plate, one in the corner at each side. One hole has worn through and is now open. There is no decoration. The other face is unremarkable; the stem is hollow. No close parallel has been found for this object. The shape and the deep patina suggest a Roman date.

A copper alloy possible bucket foot which is probably Roman. The object is 60.1mm long, 25.2mm wide and 5.4mm thick. It is roughly pelta shaped with bi-lobed terminals at each end, and a prominent bi-lobed projection in the centre of the curve. The front is moulded to make the lobes more clearly defined and the edges are rounded, but the back is flat apart from the centre which is corroded and pitted. The shape looks to be Roman in style. A similar but thicker parallel can be seen on page 122 of "Excavations at Fishbourne: Volume II" by Barry Cunliffe (1971), figure 51, number 151.Thi…

Copper alloy bell-shaped stud, probably Roman and probably related to the many other bell-shaped fittings discussed by Allason Jones (1985) and again by Allason-Jones and McKay (1985, Coventinas Well, A shrine on Hadrians Wall). The fitting has a conical head with the remains of an iron shank in the centre. This object is slightly smaller than the other bell-shaped fittings recorded from Lincolnshire, and also does not have a moulded interior either; in this instance the iron shank is visible in the centre on both sides.
