Incomplete Roman iron hipposandal. The oval plate has a curved back edge, terminating in a downward pointing hook. The front has an upward projection, which would have terminated in a loop (now missing) for attachment. To either side of the plate is a broken, sub-rectangular projection, which would have been bent towards the front projection to hold the hoof in place. The iron is heavily corroded, with fragments flaking off the surface. The plate measures 155mm in length, increasing to 185mm to take into account the projecting rear hook. It is 115.73mm wide, including the side project…

Probably Roman (possibly post medieval) iron hob nail, with a hemi-sperical head 9.9mm in diameter and 4.6mm thick and a bent shank. It weighs 1.72g. The shank is square in section below the head (5x5mm) which tapers in thickness over a (bent) 9.2mm to 4.7x2.3mm. The unbent length would have been c.15mm. The condition of the iron may suggest a post medieval date as it is rather good for Romano British. The hobnail is 13.8mm in complete length. Hobnails were used in Roman military footwear, boots were made from three main pieces of leather, the upper sole and the insole, all th…

Roman iron hob nail, badly corroded. The head measures 11.6x8.9mm and stands 5mm high. The (probably square-sectioned, though obscured by corrosion) shaft survives to a length of 4.6mm. The hob nail is 9.6mm long and weighs 1.22g. Hob nails were used in Roman military footwear, boots were made from three main pieces of leather, the upper the sole and the insole, all three layers were clenched together with hobnails, frequently arranged in patterns, some which were created to facilitate compfortable walking (Bishop and Coulston 1993, 100, fig 61 ).

Iron locking hask possibly dating from the Roman period. It is much corroded, very flaky and in bad condition. It consists of a semi-circle whose ends are connected by a bar which can be 'opened' at one side when a small cross bar (still in place) is pulled out of the bar from the other side. Although the function as a locking hasp/part of locking mechanism seems clear, it is difficult to date. Iron does not survive well in the ground and its current state of corrosion suggests a much more recent date of production and use than its find spot near the Roman fort. However, Dr Rob Collin…

An incomplete wrought iron and cast copper alloy key of probable Roman date. The probable key comprises the heavily corroded iron stem and the incomplete copper alloy handle. In its current state it measures 35.5mm by 24mm by 23mm and weighs 19.4g. The handle is cuboid-shaped, with four equally-spaced protrusions from the face opposite the iron stem. These may be the stubs of two (or three) loops, forming a handle similar to an example from south-east Lincolnshire which features in Read's 'Metal Artefacts of Anitquity' (2001, p. 69, no. 522).

The arms are 6.56mm and 6.84mm in width, and the object weighs 33g. Whilst it ressembles double spiked loops from Hatcheston (Blagg et al, 2004, nos 291 etc) it does seem to be deliberately bent in half, unlike the others…
