The slightly corroded head from a cast copper-alloy Roman Colchester derivative brooch with a double pierced lug spring attachment. The bow curves through over ninety degrees and expands into the head which has the pair of perforations uppermost. The lower hole appears to retain the remnant of the iron axis bar, judging by the trace of orange corrosion product. The upper hole is now blocked with corrosion, but would have held the chord of the spring, both of which are now missing. The wings are situated internally above the lug. They are both small and stubby and triangular in shape, …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy object: probably a harness fitting of Roman date. At one end there is a flattened circular terminal with a thick raised border on its upper surface. Within the border there is a further raised concentric circle with a raised central dot. Between the raised elements there are recesses which may once have been inlaid; there are possible traces of red enamel within the concentric circle. The sides and reverse of the terminal are slightly convex. A thick circular section shaft extends from the centre of the reverse of the terminal. The shaft extends for c. 1…

Incomplete copper alloy and enamel Roman plate brooch of the equal-ended type with a hinged mechanism, missing its pin shank and most of the enamel. It measures 34mm in length and is max.11.2mm wide. It weighs 2.15g. Both hinge mechanism and catchplate are slightly bent to one side, possibly as a result of being trodden on in ancient times. At the centre of the bow is a 11.2x12.6mm square, a double rib around a central sunken area 7.6x7.6mm. This has a small amount of white enamel remaining. Above, the bow extends dropping in a slight curve, behind which is the hinge mechanism, a…

A worn cast copper-alloy fragment from a Roman Disc-and-Trumpet brooch. The flared trumpet head survives, as does the upper section of the bow. The head is sub-circular with a protrusion at the terminal, probably a broken loop. The edge is flattened. The semi-circular perforated lugs on the lower surface are very abraded; the axis bar and pin are missing. Below the head the bow constricts to a width of 4.75mm. It then expands into a central discoidal element with the remnants of four side protrusions arranged in saltire. This element too has a flattened border, within which is a rais…

The bow is roughly triangular in section, being flat to the reverse. To the front is a mid-rib, from which either side falls away. A very worn, overcleaned copper-alloy nummus of an uncertain tetrarchic ruler, dating to AD 294-307 (Reece Period 15). Reverse: probably GENIO POPVLI ROMANI. Possibly mint of Lyon. This coin has been pierced, presumably for use as a jewellery item at a later date. Although this practice occurred in the Roman period it is most commonly documented as an early-medieval practice. The piercing respects neither obverse or reverse designs.
