A copper alloy 'fob' or 'dangler', believed to be a harness fitting from the Iron Age or Early Roman period. The object is an openwork circular disc with a projecting stem which terminates in a broken suspension loop in the centre of the reverse. It has a diameter of 34.7mm and is 22.4mm thick. The disc is damaged, but the original intention can still be understood. The design is of a circular rim within which are four evenly spaced rounded terminals from which spirals spring. There is another terminal in the centre where all four spirals end. The shape of the spirals forms an S shape…

A very worn and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester brooch dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period, c. 25-65 AD. A one-piece example with an intact rearward facing hook at the top of the head (L.: 13.1mm). This hook would have held the external chord of the spring; this latter, along with the pin, broken just below the head such that a curved vestige remains, is now missing. Below the hook there are two flat wings of which only vestiges now remain. The bow is oval in cross-section. It tapers from a maximum diameter of c. 5.4mm to less than 1.5mm at the catchplate end. The…

Incomplete cast copper alloy sword belt fitting or baldric ring, circular in profile and D-shaped in section, having a slightly flatter inner edge. The outer surface of the ring or hoop is inlaid with red glass triangles, arranged in a pattern pointing inwards from the edge, so that the alternating copper alloy spaces are triangular or diamond-shaped. The glass is the so called 'sealing wax' glass of the Iron Age, called thus because of the opaque deep red colour. It is technically known as enamel when in fact it is chips of glass inlay. The glass has undergone SEM analysis with Mary …

Incomplete cast copper-alloy Iron Age/Roman cosmetic pestle. Ralph Jackson (1985) has identified this type of artefact as a double-looped idiosyncratic version of a centre-looped type of pestle used as part of a two-piece cosmetic set. The pestle has a circular cross-section but is pointed oval shape in plan. Cast integrally there is a flat-sectioned arm coming from its side which terminates in two small circular loops, although only one now survives (set together like a figure of eight). The metal is pitted and there is a dark greyish-green patina. The majority of centre-looped mortar…

A copper-alloy La Tène III type brooch of late Iron Age to early Roman date (see R. Hattatt; 1987; pp. 21). The brooch has been made in one piece. The head consists of four coils of spring and an internal chord. One of these coils would have extended into the now-missing pin. The central spring coil extends downwards into the bow, which has flat surfaces, increases to a maximum width of 8.2mm, before tapering towards the foot. The upper surface is decorated with two incised vertical lines, which divide the surface of the bow into three roughly equal strips. The brooch appears to be…
