Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
Early Medieval silver hooked tag.
Description of find: The hooked tag consists of a circular plate of silver. Extending from the top are two semi-circular pierced attachment loops. At the base of the plate there is a flat collar (on the same plane), below this an intact hook. The head has been decorated with a circle within which there is a floral design, comprised of alternating hearts and drop-shaped petals. Inside the rounded end of each of the four petals there is a rounded crescent and below each of these a triangle pointing inwards. All of these incisions are inlaid with niel…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
A very worn and corroded Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas's Class B. The split element is missing from the attachment end on the reverse face. As is common, the attachment end is wedge-shaped (W.: 9mm) with a double perforation; both rivets have been lost. A field is possibly delineated below the rivet holes; corrosion has robbed us of discerning the decoration (if it existed). At the opposite end is a moulded animal-head terminal (L.: c. 11.9mm), with ears and eyes faintly delineated. The strap-end tapers from the attachment end to a width of 5.8mm above the terminal; the…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
A cast copper-alloy buckle of probable early-medieval date. As a colleague writing about a parallel recorded on this database (BH-8DA095) notes, the style of the artefact bears strong similarities to a series of 13th to 14th century spur buckles found during excavations in London (cf. Egan and Pritchard 1991, 106; fig. 68). However, the zoomorphic nature of the plate's decoration is very similar to that seen on the 8th to 10th-century Saxon strap-end group (see Thomas 2003). A parallel given an early-medieval date can be found illustrated in Mills (2001, 19; ref. AS11), although the l…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete cast copper-alloy artefact of early-medieval date: possibly a strap fitting. The object consists of a rectangular bar terminating in a broken loop in the same plane at one end, and a complete loop, not quite perpendicular to the bar, at the other. The bar is slightly curved upwards, with one of the terminal loops raised or depressed depending on how this incomplete object is interpreted. At the broken terminal the bar bifurcates into what may have been an open circle; just under half of this survives. The upright loop has an expanded oval head (17.0 x 13.15mm) which is…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
A cast copper-alloy artefact of 11th-century date, probably a strap fitting. The object is a ring with a thick hoop and convex oval bezel. The oval head (17.95 x 14.35mm x 4.8mm thick) is not quite perpendicular to the hoop, but at a slight angle. It is decorated with four triangular grooves arranged in saltire, but not meeting at the centre.
The artefact is difficult to parallel, but has affinities with the group of late Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-Scandinavian 'socketed hooks' (see, for example, LIN-F29FC4 and BUC-1C1BB6). One has been published, a so-called 'hooked mount' illustrated in…

Object type: SCABBARD
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
A cast copper-alloy openwork Frankish scabbard chape of Menghin's Type 3a. The slightly worn decorative details comprise a human head, probably helmeted, with ring-and-dot eyes. Above the eyes are vertical grooves above a horizontal band. On each side of the head is a beaked bird-like head, each with a voided eye. Between these heads is a narrow extension which emerges from a V-shaped terminal and which curves around the back of the object to end in a triangular expansion. This forms a clasp for the scabbard.
Other examples of this type of scabbard chape can be found on the PAS data…

Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete, gilded cast copper-alloy imitation of a Kentish 'keystone garnet' disc brooch of c. 6th-century date. The brooch has lost its pin and has suffered some removals from its edge.
It is the size of an Avent (1975) Class 2 brooch, while bearing the more simple ornament of the smaller Class 1. The central raised setting is a simple circle (Dia.: 8.1mm) (Avent (1975, 81; Fig. 8) Type 1.1), now empty. At the cardinal points are four triangular keystone settings with their points inwards (Avent (1975, 80; Fig. 5, Type 5.1). All four contain fragments of what is probably red g…

Workflow stage: Published
Description: A silver strap-end of Thomas's Class A. The strap-end is long, narrow and the sides curve very gently. The front half of the split end has been lost, and the two rivet holes on the lower half abraded through; both rivets have been lost. The front has a border down each long side, split into two by a longitudinal groove. Outside this the border is further decorated with small irregular transverse nicks making a slightly crude ladder pattern. Within is a recessed field, originally filled with niello, around a foliate design that is symmetrical down the centre length of the …

A late Anglo-Saxon three-dimensional silver finial/strap-end, broken at one end. From a sub-rectangular plate with two fixing holes depends a small rounded animal head which bites into the top of the head of a backward-looking canine creature, which in turns appears to bite another ill defined creature attacking its rump. The tail of another creature is visible at the broken end of the piece. The finial/strap-end is in the so-called Winchester style, with similar lively animals represented in 10th century manuscript borders and metalwork

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
A small silver Anglo-Saxon hooked-tag, of round, delicate shape. The hook, now twisted, depends from a round plate with two attachment holes (one blocked by deposited dirt). The back of the plate is plain, whilst the front, which is rather worn, has what appears to be a zoomorphic decoration within a plain border. This seems to consist of a beast with vegetation motifs emerging from his open jaws; further not easily identifiable details /space fillers are also present. Originally the decoration would have stood out against a black niello background.

The ingot is short cigar-shaped with a smooth upper surface and a pitted lower one which appears to have been slightly flattened; length, 35mm. A large number of silver ingots of the Viking period have been found mainly in hoards in England, Ireland and the Netherlands, as well as in Scandinavia. Silver ingots from the region of the Danelaw were probably used as bullion in payments or trade transactions. But in southern England, where there was an established Anglo-Saxon coinage, it seems more likely that they were used for casting into items of jewellery, etc. The form and abraded su…

A bent and slightly corroded incomplete cast copper-alloy artefact: probably a brooch of medieval date, perhaps earlier. The original artefact is assumed to have been annular; around two-thirds now survives. One end appears complete and terminates in a lozenge with a sub-square outward protrusion just before. It is plausible that there would have been a similar opposing arrangement, but the artefact has now broken. The object widens from c. 5.1mm at the break to a maximum width of c. 7.5mm. It the tapers to a width of c. 4.2mm before the terminal (max. W.: 9.8mm). There is a perforati…

This coin is closest to variety 1a of Type 49, described as an 'early variant' (Andrews ed. 1988, 41; refs. 35-37) but features a pecking bird in the centre of the reverse within nine roundels instead of a 'Woden' head within ten.
