Small cast copper alloy bow brooch, with sub-triangular headplate and footplate. The brooch is similar to examples of small equal-armed brooches, although this example is not symmetrical, the headplate being slightly shorter than the footplate. It is thus also very similar to examples of miniature radiate-headed brooches, and perhaps sits somewhere between the two types. The reverse has remains of the iron pin and spring surviving, possibly with traces of mineralised textile preserved in the corrosion products. Compare IOW-FE1124, and an example from a 6th-century grave at Frilford…

Iron pin with plated (silver or tinned?) expanded head. Many of the iron pins from the middle Anglo-Saxon site of Flixborough had heads plated with lead/tin alloys, mostly from the later phases of the site (Evans and Loveluck 2009, 38). It is possible that this pin is of the same date.

Cast copper alloy bow brooch. The brooch comprises a bow without headplate, and a footplate. For most of its length (18.66mm) the bow has an ovoid cross-section, with flat sides and a ventral ridge. However, at the junction with the pin and spring, at its mid-point and at the junction with the foot the bow has thickened rectangular sections. With the exception of the section of bow at the junction with the foot, which is plain, these sections are decorated with three transverse v-shaped grooves which have probably been incised. There are what appear to be three faint file marks on…
