CURATOR'S REPORT Anglo Saxon silver stap-end. Description of find An Anglo-Saxon silver strap-end with four rivet holes, one of them still containing a flat-headed silver rivet. The front of the strap-end is incised with geometric ornament and curvilinear scrollwork resembling floral fronds along the edges. No traces of inlay remain, but there may originally have been niello. The back of the object shows green corrosion traces and is very scratched around the upper rivet hole on the strap-end's body. The appearance of the scratches suggests that this is recent damage. Impressions …

A very worn and corroded Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas's Class B. The split element is missing from the attachment end on the reverse face. As is common, the attachment end is wedge-shaped (W.: 9mm) with a double perforation; both rivets have been lost. A field is possibly delineated below the rivet holes; corrosion has robbed us of discerning the decoration (if it existed). At the opposite end is a moulded animal-head terminal (L.: c. 11.9mm), with ears and eyes faintly delineated. The strap-end tapers from the attachment end to a width of 5.8mm above the terminal; the…

A worn and corroded early-medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas Class B, Type 1. The split element attachment end has been damaged with some losses to the longer edges and with the perforations abraded through on both elements; both rivets have been lost. The split runs the length of a field on the upper surface (L.: c. 12.5mm) which is decorated with punched ring-and-dot motifs: three rows of three rings with the central row above the outer rows. Below this field the strap-end has been bent, downwards at the terminal. The terminal is in the form of an animal-head moulded in …

A cast copper-alloy buckle of probable early-medieval date. As a colleague writing about a parallel recorded on this database (BH-8DA095) notes, the style of the artefact bears strong similarities to a series of 13th to 14th century spur buckles found during excavations in London (cf. Egan and Pritchard 1991, 106; fig. 68). However, the zoomorphic nature of the plate's decoration is very similar to that seen on the 8th to 10th-century Saxon strap-end group (see Thomas 2003). A parallel given an early-medieval date can be found illustrated in Mills (2001, 19; ref. AS11), although the l…

A slightly corroded early-medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas Class B, Type 2 (Trewhiddle style). A broadly 9th-century date can be suggested for this artefact (Thomas 2003, 4). The strap-end is slightly bent and abraded at the attachment end but otherwise survives complete. At the split attachment end a pair of silver rivets survive in place (see 'Notes', below). As is common, the attachment end is wedge-shaped (W.: 12.05mm). The terminal is cusped with the abrasions affecting one side. A field is delineated below the rivet holes with its top edges curving to follow the cu…

A worn cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of late Anglo-Saxon date (c. 11th century AD). The mount is sub-pentagonal in form. It has a shallow, concave reverse face and a moulded convex upper surface. The moulding takes the form of a male mask. The object has an apex loop flanked by cusped, curved edges down to the widest point (W.: 32.8mm). On the upper surface this area equates to the man's hair. On both faces the remains of a central iron rivet protrude. At the widest point are eyebrows which start at the egdes and converge, joining centrally and continuing into a large, flared …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy die stamp of early Anglo-Saxon date (c. 600 - c. 650 AD). The object is sub-trapezoidal in form. It narrows from 17.1mm at the attachment end to 7.4mm at the current terminal. There is a horizontal break at the terminal. It is presumed that the object would have had a circular terminal. Such a circle is echoed by a pair of circles just below the attachment end, half of each of which protrude from the edge of the clasp. These circles seem to imitate bosses or jewel settings on more ornate clasps, which in turn echo similar decoration on triangula…

A hand made coarseware fragment from the rim of a late Saxon/early-medieval jar type open vessel (c. 950 - c. 1050 AD). The sherd has a dark coloration due to non-oxidisation during firing. Some sooting indicates use as a cooking vessel with inclusions of a flint temper (some of which has been burnt). The sherd has suffered a small chip in the rim surface. On the complete vessel the rim would have been approximately 140mm in diameter.

From this it widens to its maximum width with a further pair of side knobs present. The mount then narrows to an incurved waist (W.: 22.1mm) below which are a further pair of knobs above the straight base. Above it are two circular perforations; these rivet holes are unaligned. A cast copper-alloy buckle frame of late early-medieval date (c. 11th century AD). The frame is sub-triangular in form: alternatively, D-shaped with a highly protruding outer edge. It is formed of a pair of opposing animal heads which converge at the outer edge. The pin bar opposite is narrowed and offset and the pin is now missing. The animals' ears, snouts and mouths are moulded. The lower surface is flat. The area between and above their mouths is solid, with a knot or similar above. The Ringerike style of the buckle suggests the above dating. The artefact has corroded to a dark…

A triangular copper-alloy hooked tag of early-medieval date. The tag has been cut from a sheet, with the apex of the triangle recurved to form the (now broken) hook. The upper surface has been decorated with three lines of rouletted, overlapping rectangles: two following the sides and the last central. The metal has corroded to a dull blue-green colour. A slightly corroded but complete late early-medieval/medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end. The object bears some similarities with strap-ends of Thomas (2004, 4-5) Class H, while not fitting into the classification neatly. An 11th- to 12th-century date is therefore suggested for this artefact. The split at the attachment end is up to 6.45mm in length. A single rivet remains in situ within a central perforation. Orange staining around the hole suggests at an iron composition for the rivet. The attachment end is wedge shaped and tapers from a width of 10.2mm to c. 8mm after 11.3mm. It i…

A very abraded fragment of dark grey earthenware with abundant small flint and chalk of early-medieval date, Early or Middle Saxon; there has been a considerable amount of early-medieval material from the findspot. The abrasions are especially deep on the dark outer side, with two very deep and wide scratches (which form a V shape) standing out from a carpet of smaller ones. As the abrasions are equally spread over both inside and outside faces it is suggested they occurred naturally since deposition.
