Silver Roman denarius of Mark Anthony dating to the period c.32-31 BC (Reece period 1). LEG III reverse type depicting an Aquila (legionary eagle) between two standards.
These coins were struck by Mark Antony for the use of his fleet and legions when he was preparing for the struggle with Octavian, which culminated in the Battle of Actium on the 2nd of September, 31 BC (Grueber, 1970, 526). Some legionary denarii remained in circulation until the 3rd century AD.

A Roman silver coin: A Republican legionary denarius of Mark Antony dating from 32 - 31 BC (Reece period 1), reverse type depicting an aquila between two standards, LEG XV below. Military mint. The coin is broken into two pieces; the largest piece is 17.6mm long, 109mm wide, 1.5mm thick and weighs 1.73g. The smaller piece is 16.7mm long, 8.8mm wide, 1.2mm thick and weighs 0.89g. The break is not abraded and the two pieces form a complete coin.

The figure of Mars and the apex on the reverse together recall the fact that the moneyer's father, Cos. 131, held the office of Flamen Martialis (an office probably held at the time of this issue by the Albinus of Cicero, Brutus 135, but later to be held by the Consul of 100).
