A silver Roman Republican 'Legionary' denarius of Mark Antony, dating to the period c.32-31 BC (Reece period 1). reverse type depicting two Legionary Standards, with a Legionary eagle between them. Travelling mint moving with Antony. cf. RRC p. 541, no. 544/27
Mark Antony issued the 'legionary' denarii from a travelling mint, possibly in Greece, to pay his fleet and legions in the build up to conflict with Octavian (Augustus), which culminated in the Battle of Actium on the 2nd of September, 31 BC (Grueber, 1970, 526).

A complete silver republican denarius, issued by L. Valerius Flaccus, Cos 100, in 108 to 107 BC (Reece Period 1). Minted at Rome. Reverse type: Mars walking left, holding spear with point downwards. The obverse has been countermarked.

The figure of Mars and the apex on the reverse together recall the fact that the moneyer's father, Cos. 131, held the office of Flamen Martialis (an office probably held at the time of this issue by the Albinus of Cicero, Brutus 135, but later to be held by the Consul of 100).

This type of coin is often referred to as the 'Tribute penny' from the bible (Matthew 22, 17-21), although it is more likely that what was being referred to was the silver drachma from Caesarea Cappadocia in Western Turkey (Moorhead: 2013, p57).

These coins were struck by Mark Antony for the use of his fleet and legions when he was preparing for the struggle with Octavius, which culminated in the Battle of Actium on the 2nd of September, 31 BC (Grueber, 1970, 526).

A silver Roman republican denarius of L. Titurius L.f. Sabinus, dating to the year 89 BC (Reece Period 1). Reverse type depicting two Roman soldiers, each carrying a woman. Mint of Rome.
The coin has been chipped at 8 o'clock on the obverse. The die has been struck slightly off flan on both faces thus obscuring some of the legend. Comparable examples can be seen at SF-C99F2D and FAPJW-1D45E5.
Overall dimensions: 19.53mm in diameter, 1.86mm in thickness and 3.47g in weight.
