A silver plated contemporary copy of a Roman republican period denarius serratus dating to the 1st century BC (Reece period 1), possibly an issue of L. Papius (79 BC). The obverse has a small bust facing right, possibly Juno Sospita clad in goats skin; the reverse is entirely lost to corrosion. The rim of the flan has a series of incised grooves. Mint of Rome. Cf. A corroded Roman copper-alloy dupondius, probably a contemporary copy of Augustus (27 BC-AD 14), dating to the period c.18-17 BC (Reece period 1). Obverse: AVGVT/TRIBV/POT, legend in three lines in oak-wreath. Reverse: [...L?]O II(I)[...], large S C. Prototype of the mint of Rome.
This is probably a contemporary copy of a dupondius of Augustus, the obverse legend abbreviated from the usual AVGVSTVS TRIBVNIC POTEST. The moneyer's name in the reverse legend is not clear, but perhaps ends [...]O III for P. Licinius Stolo or similar, cf. RIC I (2nd ed.) …
