A lead or tin-alloy object that appears to be a whistle and of probable post-Medieval date (c. 1600-c. 1800). The main body of the object is bottle shaped with a cylindrical neck and a short rounded body with an acorn shaped knop at the base. The upper cylindrical 'neck' is hollow inside and has a length of 17.9mm and an outer diameter of 14.9mm. On the inside of the object there is a solid 'floor' between the 'neck' and the 'flask' which gives the appearance that the 'flask' is solid. However, due to slight damage at the base, it is possible to confirm that it is hollow. At the rear,…

Bone whistle. A probably complete whistle whittled from a mammal long bone shaft with a deeply and crudely cut waist close to what is taken to have been the mouthpiece, and with a single oval hole at the base of a shallow angled cut on one flatter side of the bone. Glossed by handling, abraded thereafter and recently chipped at the mouthpiece. The whistle cannot now be persuaded to sound, so may have lost an inserted reed or another hole in its shaft. Probably a toy. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800

Copper alloy whistle. A cylinder with an inserted segment bearing a terminal constriction and ball at one end with remnants of a steel loop passing through it [the latter a detail only noted on examination of magnified images], and closed by an inserted plate with small curved cut-out as a mouthpiece at the other. An angled cut appears on the upper side of the tube close to the mouthpiece. The whistle retains its ‘peep’. Plated overall with white metal. The condition indicates a relatively recent date, and perhaps use as a dog whistle rather than as a toy, for signalling, or hawki…

A complete dark grey zoomorphic hawking whistle most likely made from tin alloy.
The whistle is cylindrical in shape with one end narrowing to a point and the other ending in a mouth piece. This mouth piece is convex on its top and has a concave recess on its underside. An attachment loop is placed on the top of the tube close to the pointed end from which the whistle would have been hung. Both the holes of the whistle are open although some soil is visible inside.
