A worn but compete lead alloy token dated (AD) 1728. The token is unifaced with the initials S B above the date, divided by raised horizontal lines. The reverse appears plain. These objects were probably tokens or tallies issued to farm workers, in a similar fashion to early modern hop tokens. They could also be a form of advertisement, a poor-man's version of 17/18th century trade tokens.

County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete tin alloy (probably) spoon bowl of probable post-medieval date. The spoon bowl is broadly mandolin-shaped but the back of the bowl towards the (missing) stem end widens, unlike Roman examples which have tenon joints (see Crummy 1988: 69-70 for Roman examples), although it may have transposed into a twisted stem/handle. There are illegible scratches within the bowl. The metal is very thin and overall does not appear to be of Roman date.

A cast lead alloy mount in the form of a flower. The flower head is plano-convex and deeply moulded; on the reverse of the flower head is a short neck which then expands into a broadly circular shaped, uneven disc-shaped plate. These objects have been classed as Roman military belt / harness mounts but many have been proven to be post-medieval tobacco or tea caddy or tea pot lid handles. As it is made of a lead alloy it is far more likely to be a post-medieval handle rather than a Roman fitting.
