Treasure case 2006 T430 Description Fragment of gold strip, embossed with four horizontal lines. In one corner there is a piercing, probably deliberate. The long edges have been folded back such that the folded edge appears on the ‘reverse’ side, from which the embossing has been carried out. Maximum length 30mm; maximum width 17mm; thickness less than 0.5mm; weight 1.21 grams. Identification In all likelihood the piece is more than 300 years old. However it is not possible to assign this fragment to a firm cultural or chronological context. Consequently, in terms o…

A complete cast copper alloy object, possibly a stamp. Date unknown. Length: 36.3mm; width: 5.2mm and 5.2mm thick. Weight: 6.73g. The central part of the object is square in cross-section and measures 5.2mm x 5.2mm. Two of the faces taper and splay slightly to form a flat end which measures 6.7mm x 1.7mm. This flat end is burred over slightly as if it might have been hammered. Close to the opposite end the corners of the square shape become rounded and at the end there is a deeply indented cross-shape. It is possible that the object is a stamping tool. A patina has not survive…

A complete cast lead weight of unknown date. The weight is circular in plan with a flat top and base. There are no marks or decoration present on any surface and its shape suggests it was used as a measure. The metal is a light whitish-brown colour and is worn. It weighs 32.9g. Due to a lack of contextual evidence and any diagnostic features it is not possible to date this object any more closely and may date from the Roman to post-medieval period.
