A possible sword guard or quillon. The object is made from cast copper alloy and consists of a rectangular aperture with two prongs projecting obliquely from one edge with a semicircular protrusion at their base and a notch on the opposite edge of the aperture. There were originally short, flat, rectangular metal projections from each of the short edges of the aperture, though one of these has broken away and been lost. The width of the aperture is approximately 30mm, suggesting that if this is a guard, it belonged to a sword rather than a dagger. The object may be medieval or post …

A cast lead or lead alloy flat circular spindle whorl, of Roman to Post-Medieval date. The spindle whorl is sub circular in plan and sub rectangular (flat) in cross section. The central hole is sub circular in shape and has been cast slightly off centre. The internal diameter of the hole measures 8.2mm wide. No traces of decoration are present on either the upper or lower faces. The whorl has a creamy white patina. Evidence of minor damage/wear may be found on one face and is demarcated by a dark grey-brown colour. The whorl has suffered from a minor degree of abrasion indicated by sl…

A cast lead spindle whorl, or possibly another form of weight. The whorl is flat sub circular with a circular perforation running through its centre. The external and internal sides are broadly straight and it has a flat base and a top which slopes towards the central hole. The internal diameter tapers from 11.3mm at the base to 11.9mm at the top. The top of the whorl is decorated with incised lines radiating from the central perforation; otherwise, the object is undecorated. One segment of the design has been damaged and the base has three grooves at various angles. The whorl has a d…

A nearly complete iron knife blade and tang, probably dating to either the Roman or Medieval periods (c. 1st-4th c; c. 11th-15th century AD). The knife consists of a blade which is sub-triangular in plan, with a nearly straight back and slightly curved edge; the tang tapers, is square-shaped in section and is positioned on the midline of the blade. A portion of the tang seems to have broken off at the end, and the tip of the blade has been bent backwards onto itself. On one face of this example are vestigal traces of a pellets, while the other side appears to be blank. The lack of distinguishing features makes this object difficult to date, and it may be of the Medival or Post Medieval period.
