Cast copper-alloy awl. The awl has one end which tapers to a point and is circular in section, the centre of the shaft is bulbous and irregular in section whilst the other end flattens to a blunt edge and is rectangular in section. Awls were used as a tool for piercing and scoring material such as leather. Such tools are known to occur in the Roman period but many are thought to be of Bronze Age date. Due to the high level of associated Roman material it is possible that this is of Roman date but material from all periods, including prehistoric, have also been found in the same l…

The muller is flat and smooth on the face that was used for rubbing, and convex on the opposite face, where it was held and pushed across a base for grinding. Cast cu-alloy rapier blade dating from the Middle Bronze Age, ca. 1500-1250BC. It is likely to belong to the Acton Park 2, Taunton (Cemmaes) or Pennard metalwork assemblage, corresponding to Needham’s (1997) Period 5, c. 1500-1150BC. The hilt (which was made from perishable material such as antler, wood or bone) is missing and so are the rivets with which it was attached to the blade.
