Circumstances of discovery: Whilst searching with a metal detector Description: Silver hollow cast sphere from a huntsman's whistle. The pea is now missing. Decoration is applied on both sides in the form of a quatrefoil motif with a plain cross running through the centre. Discussion: This fragment was found within very close proximity to the Silver Huntman's whistle found in October 2002 (see 2005 T22; TAR 2995 - 2006), and as such is most likely to be part of the same artefact. Due to its age and precious metal content, this item would qualify as treasure under the Trea…

A cast lead alloy (possibly pewter) fragment from a whistle of post medieval or early modern date (1650 – 1900 although probably 19th century). The fragment consists of the lower part of the cylindrical body of the whistle and the perforated knop shaped terminal. Although crushed in cross section the whistle would have originally been oval. The outer surface is decorated with a series of cast circumferential bands which enclose the lower and end parts of the whistle. The knop shaped terminal in turned and the hole pierced through the end is 3.4mm diameter. The hole is horizontal rath…

A fragment of post-medieval silver whistle, consisting of a hollow tube decorated with relief interlaced circles creating lozenge shapes, each with a raised central square. At one end there is an elaborate collar of rope work passed between three coils of metal (probably cannetille). The fragment was originally thought to date from the fifteenth or early sixteenth century, but subsequent parallels with relief ornament and cannetille (e.g. LIN-403242 and SUR-07B392) have indicated a slightly later date, in the 16th or early 17th centuries.

A late Medieval - early Post Medieval pottery incomplete whistle of Low Countries White Ware with green glaze dating 1480-1650. The whistle is the characteristic biconical shape with flaring foot and slightly flaring rim and tubular mouthpiece projecting from the shoulder. The fabric is a fine buff-grey with a mid green glaze covering the majority of the surface. There are a couple of small areas without a glaze, one of which appears to be where the whistle was abutting another vessel when stacked in the kiln. There is some damage to the foot, rim and end of the mouthpiece. …

A silver huntsman's whistle of 16th century date. The whistle has been cut from silver sheet, rolled and soldered together. The whistle has three distinct elements: the mouthpiece, the body, and the open end. These are separated by discoidal collars soldered on to the body. These collars were made by a length of silver wire through smaller silver wire hoops. clearly visible due to damage in one section of the collar near the open end. The mouthpiece is incomplete, having lost most of its silver tubing in antiquity. The body is decorated with a rose/flower circumscribed by a square wit…

A copper alloy musical instrument; a whistle or other similar pipe like instrument. The whistle is made from a cast tube of copper alloy. Towards one terminal is a semi-circular hole which is obliquely angled in profile to provide a lip which would give the whistle's sound. Half way between this end and the broken end is an incised line round the pipe, presumably decorative. The far end is broken, and there is damage on the lower part of the pipe. It is 66.07mm in length, 10.1mm in diameter, and weighs 15.59g. Very few copper alloy whistles have been recorded on the database. Some o…

Description: An incomplete 16th -17th century silver huntsman's whistle. This whistle is cut from silver sheet and soldered; it is cylindrical in shape. Two triple stranded wire collars divide the whistle into three sections; of which only the central section survives. This central section is undecorated and has a circular suspension loop soldered onto its underside one end. Fragments of the terminal sections of the whistle survive and are distorted, one of these fragments is flaring in width and therefore more likely to be the mouthpiece end of the whistle.

Probably a fragment from the middle of a child's toy whistle, and probably of late medieval to early post-medieval date. There is no exact parallel, but it would work well with the foliate motif at top (as blown) and the openwork saltire-in-circle tab at the bottom, through which a cord to secure it around the neck could be set. The lead artefact consists of a hollow cylindrical shaft that narrows, particularly internally, to one end and is flanked on either side by asymmetrical open work. On one side of the shaft the open work decoration is symmetrical to itself and has a length of 2…

18th-19th Century. Lead-tin or pewter alloy, cast, probable hunting whistle. Length 47.5mm, Width 18.7mm, Thickness 13.8mm, Diameter 18.7mm, Weight 22.8mm. Virtually complete, fair sized whistle - used for sounding a warning, attracting attention or signalling, especially hawking although this one has the unusual moulded decoration of a fox or hunting hound design at the terminal. Otherwise plain at the mouthpiece end other than the 'D' shaped sound hole and two transverse bands. A post-medieval copper-alloy hawking whistle. The whistle consists of a horizontal cylinder with angled mouthpiece and cut out sound hole. At its inner end, this cylinder curves downwards, extending into a near-vertical handle. Above this handle, and facing in the opposite direction to the whistle cylinder, is a moulding in the form of an outward-facing bird's head. Feathers are depicted at the inner end of the head, where there are also two eyes in the form of punched rings and a backward-pointing crest. Cast copper alloy ‘hawking’ whistle of probable post medieval or very early modern date (1500 – 1800). The whistle is irregular (broadly cylindrical) in plan and circular in cross section. It has been badly corroded and has also been abraded by movement in the ploughsoil. The mouth of the whistle is slight tapered and there is an oval (tear-drop shaped) opening just beneath the mouth. The base of the whistle is open and tapered towards the base. The body is decorated with a series of incised turned lines which decorate the middle of the whistle and the base. The whistle also expa…
