Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn and corroded, broadly circular cast lead object, possibly a spindle whorl or other weight. The whorl is plano-convex, with a trapezoidal cross-section. The top is generally flattened, with one side shallowly angled, possibly as a result of wear. It is basic and has suffered heavy corrosion and some pitting all over. It is seemingly undecorated. The artefact has a central hole with a diameter of c. 8.3mm. The object is 10.3mm thick and weighs 26.53g. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindl…

A cast lead spindle whorl of Roman or later date. It is circular in form, dome-shaped in section with a central circular aperture. From this point the shaft again widens to form a flattened, rectangular top this time at 90° angle to the tip. Both ends of the pin are very worn and while its function is not apparent it may have been used as a pin for a buckle or brooch. The metal is a dark brownish-black colour and is slightly worn. The pin is 33.6mm long, 2.7mm wide and weighs 1.4g. Due to the lack of any diagnostic features and the loss of patination it is no…

A cast copper-alloy belt or strap fitting of possible Late Roman to Early Anglo-Saxon date. It is formed from a single, thick rectangular sheet of copper alloy with rounded ends that is folded so that the ends meet at the attachment end of the object. A large, roughly rectangular lump of bronze slag, airholes throughout and some elements of the raw copper sulphide are visible (a green-blue colour). The slag has a good deep green patina, similar to that seen on some local Bronze Age metalwork, so it may date from this period. If this lump of slag is indeed Bronze Age, it is interesting that it has survived and was not re-melted, as it is quite an amount of bronze.

Complete copper alloy cast disc or token of uncertain date. The reverse is plain and the obverse carries a design in high relief. The disc is rather chunky and larger and thicker overall than a typical lead token. The design is possibly a tree although being basically tripartite in design the image of a tree may be incidental. No parallel was found for this object and although it was initially considered as a possible Iron Age potin this is unlikely and a more likely date, based on design is Post Medieval.
