Copper alloy
Miniature axe or axe-chisel. Cast flat tapering blade, resembling a miniature version of the earliest and simplest solid cast copper alloy axe-heads. The sides are slightly indented, the blade curved and perhaps thinned by sharpening, while the butt end is thin.
Antiquarian discoveries suggest these objects might be hafted with a handle set at the narrower end. A function as a chisel or a leatherworking blade is possible, though the broad flat tang would tend to split a handle.
The surface is pitted by ancient corrosion, though the object appears currently stabl…

Possible Awl. Cast square-section shank with one pointed end, a mid-shaft expansion, and a flattened, possibly spatulate, end. Both ends are slightly bent, probably recently, while the surface is pitted by (inactive) corrosion overall. The early dating offered is necessarily speculative, but the finder has also recently reported a miniature axe head of Early Bronze Age form from the vicinity. That find was in similar pitted condition, though Roman finds from the site do not show such distinctive corrosion. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2150-1500 BC.

Barbed and tanged flint arrowhead, dating from the late Neolithic- early Bronze Age, c. 2500- 1500 BC.

The object was described as follows: Cast oval plano-convex object with a pair of angled lugs projecting from its upper surface. Other surface irregularities may represent further elements of a decorative scheme, though the abraded and knobbly surface …

The flat axe is broadly sub rectangular in plan with a splayed crescent shaped blade. In profile it is broadly lentoid, with slight tapering edges. In cross section the axe is D shaped with one edge displaying a distinctive curved (domed edge) whilst the opposite is relatively flat. It is likely that this is caused by the axe being cast in an open stone mould. The butt is relatively thin having a narrow rounded profile; the width at the butt is 13.96mm (thickness: 1.55mm). The side…

An end scraper on a soft hammer struck flake off the cortex of a mid grey flint pebble. The distal facet has been slightly flaked to make an end scraper with use indicated by gloss on the dorsal surface beginning at the left distal corner.Butler(2005) illustrates later Bronze age pieces on page 186 of which the slightly retouched flakes 6 and 7 are the closest examples.

A single platform flake core on a mottled grey brown flint with cream flecks and a large quartzy inclusion. The gaps between the flake ridges where they meet the platform edge have been deeply abraded giving a scalloped platform plan. This may have isolated the individual platforms for a set of crested removals which was however not attempted.A similar scalloped platform core is illustrated by Butler(2005) on page 180, fig.74,2.

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged flint arrowhead (2150 BC - 1500 BC). The arrowhead is asymmetrical in plan and bi-facially worked over each face. One of the barbs is missing. In plan, the side with the complete barb is slightly concave and the other side is straight. The end of the tang is obliquely shaped.
This arrowhead is pale grey with some creamy mottling. It is unclear how old the break is.
34.9 x 25.7 x 4.9mm. Weight: 3.27g.

Flint pebble blade, oblong with one end pointed in plan and convex-concave in profile. The left margin has been retouched up to the medial ridge. The left distal edge has a hinge fracture. The proximal end has been snapped. The right margin is backed. The ventral side has deep pitting. The flint appears to have been heated. It is a dark grey and the cortex a dark beige in colour and covers 1-49% of the surface area.

A soft hammered short flake from a cortical platform of a brown flint pebble. The dorsal surface carries 2 sinuous converging flake scars and the distal end is terminated by a hinge fracture from the opposite direction. The left margin is semi-abruptly edged on its dorsal side and this continues from the medial to the distal on the ventral side, ending in a small notch. The right margin has a short untidy length of semi-invasive retouch. The indistinct preform and basic retouch suggest Later Prehistoric work. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A triangular section flake of grey-brown flint with pointed ends and indistinct or converging ripples. There is incipient patination which on this site suggests older Mesolithic material but is not conclusive as individual pieces may vary. This shape of flint is found on old flint land-surfaces as a natural 'starch fracture'. Butler(2005),colour plate 7 illustrates one, but this example has slight crush damage at the proximal end as well as distal and nearby margin wear from use as a piercer or cutting tool. Experimentally it has been found that spindle shaped flints like this can for…

A side scraper on a large, thick grey and cream primary flake from a pebble, mellowed by incipient patination. The flake has begun to patinate without any visible signs of use. It may have been struck in Later Mesolithic or Early Neolithic times, guessing from the surface condition of other local flint finds. The retouch through the patina is haphazard and looks like damage, but is all invasive or semi-invasive on the left dorsal margin and concentrated again on that margin on the ventral side. Here there are patches of similar diffuse gloss running from these scars so it appears that…

Arrowhead. Knapped flint barbed and tanged arrowhead. Very finely made with a graceful curve in its cutting edge. The edge, barbs and tang are pressure flaked; the tip of one barb is lost, probably a recent break. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, -2150-1500 BC.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper-alloy flat axe dating from the Early Bronze Age, i.e. c. 2200-1900BC. The axe is very worn on both obverse and reverse with the decoration almost obliterated and 'washed out'. The blade and sides are very worn, too. However, on the surface are still the remains of grooved decoration: rows of diagonal lines making up a zigziag pattern. Blade and top of the axe were undecorated. Axes such as this were part of the late Migdale/early Aylesford metalwork tradition (Schmidt and Burgess 1981, no. 198).

Scraper constructed on a broken flake. The bulb is still present on the ventral face. The right lateral edge is convexed. The left lateral edge has been broken but this occurred before the flint had been used as a scraper. The dorsal face has been semi abruptly retouched on the convexed left lateral edge. The straight distal end shows that the knapping occurred after the flake had been broken. The break on the right lateral edge runs from the proximal to distal end.

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper-alloy casting waste of probable Bronze Age date.
The artefact is sub-conical, its upper surface being slightly concave and irregular. Below, the artefact tapers downwards, terminating in two short jets. The object measures 36.4mm long, 28mm wide and 23.3mm high. The weight is 58.2g.
Examples of similar casting jets have been found in hoards of Middle to Late Bronze Age metalwork (see, for example, 2006 T36, from Devon). Such pieces represent a plug of waste copper-alloy which is created when casting socketed implements, such as axes, in two-piece moulds.

Cast bronze chisel with a fine dark green patina. Cutting edge expanded and asymmetric. From the cutting edge the section changes, its width narrowing as its thickness increases to an irregular square section, 8.1 x 6.4mm at the butt. While this example lacks the expanded 'shoulder' seen on other Bronze Age chisels it is not without parallel and can be compared to finds from Priory Farm Cave, Monkton, Pembs. (Savory 1980, Fig. 31 No 265.2) and the Sparkford, Somerset, hoard (Burgess, 1980, Fig. 3.18 c.)
