A complete, albeit broken, Modern vinaigrette, likely dating to the eighteenth to nineteenth centuries. The vinaigrette box would have been used to house perfume or scents, such as cedar wood chips or a cloth soaked in perfume, and used by the upper classes in Georgian and Victorian England. The box is made from copper-alloy but has been treated with silver gilt on its exterior. The box is hinged; however, the top does not open. Although the backplate has bent and come away from the top of the box, it is in very good condition considering the circumstances of discovery. The internal s…

A cast copper-alloy, openwork pendant most likely a vinaigrette. Description: The pendant is sub-teardrop-shaped in plan with an integrally-cast, circular suspension loop at the apex. The loop has a twisted rope-effect design. The body of the pendant has an openwork, floral design on both sides, is gilded over all surfaces and has been cast to create an internal hollow space and an opening along one side that was used to gain access to the interior space. This side opening is now partially filled with iron corrosion but two small protruding knops appear to be a hinge-point suggesti…

A cast copper alloy object probably dating from the Medieval to Post-Medieval period. The object is incomplete but would have been circular in plan and conical. Projecting from the top of the object is a sub-circular knop below which is a collar. The rim at the base of the object is slightly turned out and is decorated with a circumferential band. The object is decorated with vertical roles of three circular perforations. The exact function of this object is uncertain. There are no visible remains of an attachment for a clapper within the object which would occur within a bell. The…

A 19th century vinaigrette, used to house perfume or scents, such as cedar wood chips and used by the upper classes in Georgian and Victorian England. The box is made from fine silver wire, and decorated with intricate open wire filigree in floral designs. The box is hinged and there is a small rounded silver knob to act as a catch; the box still opens. Although slightly damaged, the box is in very good condition considering the circumstances of discovery. There is a reddish hue to the silver, suggesting a lower grade silver with high copper content. The box may have been housed withi…
