An incomplete cast copper-alloy vessel leg, probably from a cauldron, posnet or skillet, of Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1500-1700). The pot leg is sub-rectangular in plan with a rounded lower terminal and rectilinear upper. The leg is broadly triangular in cross section. There is a fairly worn break on the upper terminal, severing the fragment from the rest of the leg. The break is just above the lower edge of what would have been a raised transverse collar. The rear has a raised web for strength. It is patinated black-brown with patches of b…

Iron possible vessel fragment. Cast cauldron leg of trilobate section, with a narrow flat foot, expanding towards its junction with the rest of the vessel. The outer surface [as used, inferred from the angle at the foot] is lightly concave, with an integrally cast reinforcing rib behind it. Broken unevenly at the top. Polishing appears on the inner side, if not the result of heating or light sooting. The mass suggests good survival of the metal core. Dr Kevin Leahy asserts that cast iron was introduced only from the end of the medieval period [c.1490] for a restricted range of uses beg…

An incomplete iron bowl of the post medieval period (AD1850-1900). The bowl  is circular in shape formed from a hemisphere,it has a flat base which has been soldered on. The side of the bowl shows no decoration. Due to corrosion the rim of the bowl is broken in several places, large pieces of the base are also missing because of corrosion. All surfaces of metal are very pitted and have corrosion affecting all areas. It cannot be said for certain what this bowl would have been used for however, because of its robust form it was possibly for a utilitarian use. Thickness: 5.16…

A fragment of a cast iron cooking vessel of late medieval to post medieval date. The fragment comprises part of the lower side and base along with a stump of a leg which has a D-shaped cross section; originally there would have been three or four of these spaced equidistant around the base, which is round-bottomed to sit over a fire. The body has two ridges running around the circumference and would probably have been globular with an everted rim. The original exterior diameter would have been around 300mm.

A fragment of a cast iron Vessel of Post-Medieval to Modern date (AD 1700-1850). The object is a pot leg and section of vessel wall. The leg is a rounded sub-rectangular form which tapers in toward the foot. The upper edge retains a section of curved, rectangular sectioned wall from the vessel. All edges of the vessel wall have abraded breaks. Height: 42.22mm, Width: 70.51mm, Thickness: 5.89mm, Weight: 136.6g Butler et al. (2009) suggest cast iron vessels replace copper alloy at around AD 1700 to 1850 in different parts of the country. Like most iron items they do not survi…

A fragment of a post Medieval cast iron cooking vessel. The fragment comprises a 99mm long section of body wall, with two parallel circumferencial ribs running around it, an a single leg, 47mm in length with circular cross section which tapers to a blunt point. The condition would suggest a relatively recent (18th to early 19th century) date, but the form essentially remained unchanged from the Medieval period so it may be earlier.

Iron vessel fragment. Cast everted rim and part of the upper wall of a cauldron with a rounded body. A sharply angled round section handle is attached, with its upper end butting the rim and its lower end springing from the vessel wall. A raised circumferential ridge of width 4.5mm passed around the vessel at the level from which the handle was set, with another rib 24mm lower down the wall. Dr Kevin Leahy kindly notes that the casting of iron objects was essentially a post-medieval development. A satirical engraving of c.1641 shows an English soldier on campaign in Ireland equipped w…

An incomplete iron leg from a tripod cauldron, dating to the Medieval period (c. AD 1150-1450). The leg is cylindrical in shape tapering to a pointed and slightly flared foot. The end opposite the foot shows an L-shaped break where it would once have been attached to the main body of the cauldron. The leg shows signs of corrosion. The overall dimensions are as follows: 109.08mm in length, 28.3mm in width, 24.07mm in thickness, the object was too heavy for the scales to accurately measure the weight.

The pot leg measures 85.56mm in length, 43.26mm in width at the top, 16.80mm in width at the foot and weighs 153g. Butler et al. A fragment of an iron object with an applied copper-alloy fitting, possibly an element of a vessel dating to the Roman period. The copper-alloy fitting is embedded in a slightly convex iron sheet. On the upper surface, the fitting is circular in plan and hemispherical in section, with two tongue-shaped extensions. On the underside, the fact that the fitting is hollow is apparent. The copper-alloy fitting measures 13mm in length, 37mm in width and 22mm in height. The iron object has a length of 14mm.
