A cast copper alloy fragment of an Iron Age torc. This type of torc is a common find in Scotland, but much rarer in Yorkshire – although examples are known. All that survives of the torc are four ribbed beads, all cast together. They are heavily pitted and corroded, as are the breaks at either end. The reverse is flatter and smoother, while the front is ribbed. It is not clear exactly how many ribbed would have made up the torc. On the reverse of one of the beads there is a back to front L-shaped aperture, this may have been used to hold the beads to the rest of the necklace. A si…

An incomplete copper-alloy hinged beaded torc of Late Hallstatt - Late Iron Age date, c. 650-100 BC. The remaining bracelet comprises four (4) conjoined sub-ovate knops with narrowed ribbed grooves at the juncture between each knop. The section is an asymmetric ovate having a more distinct curve to the upper surface. One of the terminal knops has a circular sectioned tapering projection - or tenon - to the outer edge. This would have secured this end of the torc to a mortice hole at the other end. The opposite terminal knop has a deep rectangular aperture flanked by perforations and w…

The bead is cruciform, or quatrefoil, with a flattened central panel through which is a central square aperture. The aperture would have accommodated an iron rod onto which the beads would have been threaded. Each arm terminates in convex ovate lobes. One lobe appears undecorated, a second has a single horizontal groove, and the remains two have repeated parallel transverse grooves. The metal has a light green patina and is in good condition. The object is 25.7mm long, 25.…

The a sub-circular section rod which has been shaped forming a sub-oval shape in plan. There is a gap of 24mm between the two terminals. The diameter of the rod expands towards the terminals. The terminals are moulded with three expanded ridges and flat circular ends. Due to damage on the terminal, they appear to be hollow, or partially hollow, as voids are visible when looking through the damaged holes. The terminal maybe a separate component as the moulding appear to encase the rod, and therefore cast onto the rod. However due to the corrosion of the rod and treatment by the finder, …

Part of a probable Iron Age or Early Roman copper alloy beaded torc dating from 100 BC - 200 AD. The surviving fragment is four beads cast in one. The two centre beads are biconical, one of the outer beads is more rounded, probably owing to wear and corrosion, and the other has a more rectangular terminal. There is a simple collar between each pair of beads. There is iron corrosion along one side of the object, and testing with a magnet suggests that there is an iron core. It is not clear whether the iron along the edge has corroded from the inside, or whether it is from another objec…
