Description: Piece of gold rod, probably a small fragment of a flange-twisted or bar-twisted torc with three flanges, now bent into a spiral of two full turns. One end is original, with a rounded tip and neat triangular cross-section. From the rounded tip, the terminal flares slightly for c. 10mm and runs straight, before starting to coil. As it starts to curve, each face becomes concave so that the cross-section is Y-shaped, and the rod is then neatly twisted as well as bent into a coil. After two full turns the rod is apparently cut or broken. It is…

Fourteen fragments of gold alloy (electrum) twisted round-sectioned wire. All, apart from three single pieces, consist of two twisted wires. All are broken at both ends into lengths between 10mm and 29.5mm. Diameter of cross-section 1.5 - 1.7mm. Weight 12.97g. The findspot is close to an area in which 148 very similar fragments were recovered by the same finder between 1987 and 1996 (BM acc nos. 1989, 1201.1-2; 1990, 0304.1-135; 1991, 0602.1-7; 1997, 0901.1-3). On the reverses of two buffer terminals of a Late Iron Age torc found in 1985 (BM acc. nos. 1985, 1204.1-2) are the stum…

Incomplete copper alloy spiral-twisted torc dating to the Taunton and Penard 'Ornament Horizon' metalwork phases of the Middle Bronze Age, circa 1400-1150 BC. The present 73mm diameter annular shape is formed from circular-section bronze rod which has been twisted into a spiral. The ends slightly overlap and both have been broken in antiquity. On one of the broken ends the twist and cross-section begins to taper-off suggesting that the break is close to a missing hooked-end terminal. The other end is an abrupt break across full twist and cross-section. The evidence strongly suggests t…

Description: Complete gold Middle Bronze Age four-flange twisted-bar torc. The main bar has been cut longitudinally to create an X-shaped cross-section and has been twisted relatively evenly. The hoop has been slightly distorted and a number of the crests of the twist have been bent or otherwise damaged. At either end of the twisted section is a trumpet-shaped terminal. These appear to be integrally cast and have a circular cross-section. At each terminal the bar tapers just before the twisted flange ends. Each terminal then doubles back and gradually expands along its length. Both of…

Description: Incomplete fragment from a gold Middle Bronze Age flange twisted torc comprising one terminal and a length of twisted metal, terminating in a break. The surviving terminal is oval in cross-section and exhibits evidence of hammering at the tip. Four longitudinal cuts have been made into the bar to create an X-shaped cross-section and the bar has then been twisted. The piece curves along its length and terminates in a break. This would appear to be accidental, rather than deliberate. The edges of a number of the twists are dented, probably due to post-depositional factors. …

Fragment, probably from an Iron Age torc or bracelet, or a Roman bracelet. Two circular-sectioned strands of gold, each tapering slightly from one cut end to the other, twisted around each other. Total length 39mm. Diameter of strands at narrow end circa 2.5mm, diameter at the thicker end circa 3.5 - 4mm. Weight 7.5g. For potentially similar examples see PAS-845331 (Iron Age torc), SWYOR-CFE7F7 (Iron Age bracelet) and a 3rd-century bracelet in the collections of the British Museum (museum number 1883,1213.375).

Fragment of penannular copper alloy middle Bronze Age spiral twisted torc. The fragment is 68.5mm long, 54mm of which is comprised of a twisted spiral with curved peaks (5.8mm thick) and troughs (4.5mm thick), and the remainder is narrowed to a circular section (3.2mm in diameter). The fragment has a dark green to black patina with old breaks at either end. Based on the curvature of this fragment the estimated original diameter of the whole torc would be approximately 220mm. The find is paralleled by examples found in the 'Near Lewes' hoard in 2011 cf. SUSS-C5D042 which date to the mi…

Description: A buffer terminal of a multi-strand torc, paired with one found on 22/12/05 (2006T13; TAR 2005/6, no. 81). The decoration of the two are the same (cable moulding around the edge, engraved curvilinear La Tène design with pecked dots on the face), although this second example lacks a curlicue on the front face. It is also pockmarked with larger casting flaws. Again, stubs of wire line the periphery of the reverse, but there is no fired clay. Dimensions: Diameter 21.5mm, thickness 6.5mm, weight 15.79g. Metal Content: 33-36% gold, 58-61% silver, the remainder copp…

Gold rotating dorsal muff from a torc. A composite ring constructed of six components comprising two broad semi-circular-sectioned concentric hollow ribs (or tubes) between three narrow twisted wires (probably square-sectioned) soldered to a sheet inner part. The twisted wires appear very worn. The surface of the inner sheet has concentric wear and scratches where the separate parts of the torc were twisted together. External diameter 24mm. Internal diameter19mm. Weight 10.94g. 84-87% gold, 10-12% silver and the remainder being copper
