Medieval or Post Medieval lead token. The token is plain on the reverse and on the front carries a design of a short cross in a central circle surrounded by a second outer circle which is divided into four quadrants allighed diagonally to the central cross. There is a single pellet in the centre of each of these quadrants. Lead tokens are notoriously difficult to date with possible dates ranging from c.1200-1800. Ones carrying initials are usually deemed to be Post Medieval (1600-1800) and others which seem to mimic long cross pennies are deemed to be Medieval (1300-1500). The m…

A cast lead token of early Post-Medieval date. It is flat and circular in form with eight radiating lines on the front face, creating eight triangular segments each containing a single pellet. This token is similar to early Post-Medieval examples (see Mitchiner and Skinner, 1984: pl. 11 no. 42, pl. 14 no. 80) and probably dates to between the 16th and 17th centuries AD.

A worn lead token of probable later Medieval to early Post-Medieval date. It is similar in form to penny size Boy Bishop tokens, although lacks the mitre on the obverse and has pellets on the reverse in place of a legend. A similar token is noted by Mitchiner and Skinner (1984: pl. 15 no. 10), which suggests a probable date in the late-15th-16th centuries AD for the current example.

A lead boy bishop token, penny size, of Rigold's series I,F c.1470-1539 AD. The E of AVE in the reverse legend appears to resemble an S, but this may simply be due to the preservation of the token rather than an error in its manufacture. Rigold, 1978: p. 94.
