Here we have a token to perplex those fans of Exonumia. It is most probably, a late 18th century half penny token but the exact identity will remain open to suggestion. There are the remnants of a ship to one side and a strong suggestion of the seated figure of Brittania, to the other. By way of a parrallel, the Fitzwillam Museum collection of 18th century tokens has a number of very similar tokens dating from the end of the century. (See CM_QC_3951-R(2) at http://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/dept/coins/opac/).

A very corroded 'Macclesfield half-penny' token of Charles Roe and Co. Almost all of the surface detail has been lost. The obverse would originally have depicted a bewigged head facing right with an inscription 'CHARLES ROE ESTABLISHED THE COPPER WORKS 1758' and the reverse a seated female figure facing left beside machinery holding a spade, above the date and inscribed 'MACCLESFIELD HALFPENNY'.

A copper alloy halfpenny token dating to 1667. When the monarchy was restored under Charles II (1660-1685) halfpence were omitted from the new silver coinage. As a result, individuals in many towns and cities minted their own to facilitate trade.

Copper alloy trading token issued in 1669. The obverse shows a motif depicting a bird perched upon what could be wheat, but it could also feasibly be a tower, or even a crown, although this last is unlikely. Owing to wear around the edge of the token the lettering in the border (a beaded row) is unclear; the following is apparent: AT.?WHEAT.SAR On the reverse the same wear prevents clear reading but it has the following: SHEAFE.IN.RA This last could be RAMSEY as seen on similar tokens. On both sides the perimeter lettering has large unclear areas. However, on the reverse side ther…
