Copper alloy possible surgical implement. A cast square section tapered shank, bent sharply [?by plough strike?] at its broader end, and expanded very slightly at its flattened tip, which forms a round-ended spatulate blade. This resembles a post-medieval nail fragment, but the terminal would not have survived use as such and is so neatly formed as to suggest deliberate manufacture in this form; there is also a fine dark patina overall - except at the broken end. A fragment of a tanged copper alloy blade of uncertain, possibly Roman, date (c. AD 43 - 410). The blade has a leaf shape with a slightly raised central rib on both sides which extends into a tang with an eliptical section, 32 mm long, 5.8 mm wide and 3.9 mm thick. Copper alloy possible surgical implement. A thin tube made by rolling sheet metal of thickness 1mm, tapered to form a wedge-shaped point at one end, perhaps functioning as a probe. At the other end, a neat rectangular flap protrudes, integral to the sheet metal. A longitudinal butted seam is aligned with this flap, and its course can be traced nearly as far as the putative point. The imaginative use of rolled sheet metal is probably a Roman rather than a later method of construction.
