Copper alloy possible surgical implement. A cast square section tapered shank, bent sharply [?by plough strike?] at its broader end, and expanded very slightly at its flattened tip, which forms a round-ended spatulate blade. This resembles a post-medieval nail fragment, but the terminal would not have survived use as such and is so neatly formed as to suggest deliberate manufacture in this form; there is also a fine dark patina overall - except at the broken end. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Length: 56.5mm, Width: 4.7mm, Thickness: 4.7mm, Weight: 8.18gms

A fragment of a copper alloy object, possibly a surgical or toilet instrument of Roman date (c. AD 43 - 410). The object has an oval-sectioned stem which appears to have the begining of a barley-sugar twist before terminating in an apparently old break. The object then flares out to form an asymmetrical plate with a drilled and counter-sunk central perforation. On one surface a groove or channel runs along the plate from this perforation to the terminal edge, another break. The plate tapers in thickness towards this edge. There is a narrow gap running from the perforation to the o…

A fragment of a tanged copper alloy blade of uncertain, possibly Roman, date (c. AD 43 - 410). The blade has a leaf shape with a slightly raised central rib on both sides which extends into a tang with an eliptical section, 32 mm long, 5.8 mm wide and 3.9 mm thick. The blade is thin with a shallow lozenge section, 3.04 mm thick at the centre, tapering to 1.42 mm at the edge. The blade terminates 26 mm from the junction with the tang, in an old, jagged break. A similar object is described in record NMGW-58ADCF, and identified as a possible Roman surgical in…

Incomplete Roman copper alloy possible medical implement, perhaps a scalpel, partly wrought oval-sectioned handle (3 x 3.5mm) with longitudinal seam and delicate cast turned baluster terminal with tiny projecting point. the other end of the handle thins where hammered flat to form the blade, now with an irregular break and most of the blade missing. Extant length 64mm. Width of blade at break 10mm, thickness 1mm. Cf. handles from a scalpel/dissector with leaf-shaped terminals in Jackson (1986), 119-67, fig.1.

Copper alloy blade of uncertain date, possibly a Roman surgical implement The object has a leaf-shaped blade and protruding incomplete and distorted tang (with a surviving length of 46.9mm and a weight of 3.5g). The blade-end of the tang has straight and parallel sides (5.1mm wide and 0.8mm thick) and is truncated and bent with little original surface surviving. The blade is leaf-shaped (39mm long and 20.3mm wide) and has a clear central ridge on both faces giving a low lozengic section to the blade (with a maximum thickness of 1.4mm). The original blade edge has been lost but th…

Copper alloy possible surgical implement. A thin tube made by rolling sheet metal of thickness 1mm, tapered to form a wedge-shaped point at one end, perhaps functioning as a probe. At the other end, a neat rectangular flap protrudes, integral to the sheet metal. A longitudinal butted seam is aligned with this flap, and its course can be traced nearly as far as the putative point. The imaginative use of rolled sheet metal is probably a Roman rather than a later method of construction. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Length: 74.8mm, Diameter: 4.8mm, Width (at flap): 11.6mm, Weight: 5.94gms

Copper alloy possible surgical implement. A straight-sided strip, tapered to a rounded point which has been thinned and sharpened by wear at one end, and sharply kinked at the other where it is broken. Patches of white metal plating appear along the flattened and worn edges towards the point, including, on one side only, in a rectilinear strip noted by the finder. The kink at the other end might be apt to a fragment from a pair of tweezers, but could equally mark that damage, when so ever inflicted, and deliberately or not, which reduced the object to its current state. White metal pl…

Copper alloy possible surgical implement. A cast blade of elongated sub-triangular form, resembling one side of a pair of tweezers, thinned at its broader end and thickened as it narrows, terminating at a small sharp curved rhomboid point. The pointed end might have served as a scoop or pick, though it is now dangerously sharp for this to be attempted. The broader 'tweezer' blade may have had a counterpart, though again, how attached is now unclear. Traces of white metal plating appear on one side of the object. Now bent or curled and approaching an S shape in profile. Suggested date:…

Copper alloy possible surgical implement fragment. Cast oval section rod with a facetted rhomboid terminal at one end, separated from the rest by a doubled collar moulding. A further double moulding limits a plain zone, with a zone of elongated triangular facets beyond it; the object is broken at a further double collar moulding, where its section approaches a flat-sided sub-rectangular form. The mouldings may be cut using a lathe, as that at the widest part of the object appears to have 'slipped', which could not occur with moulded decoration. An alternative identification as a stylu…

Copper alloy possible surgical instrument. Cast shank of round section with a short [14mm] flattened or expanded section towards its midpoint. Now bent into a loop. There is the suspicion of a graduated thickness to the shank, though this may be the result of corrosion and flaking of a patinated surface. As the object now survives, there appears to be one pointed end and one broken end, the two now adjacent. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Copper alloy surgical implement. Cast rectangular section rod, expanding in its width towards a probably hammered narrow blade approaching a V-section, though with a slight longitudinal concavity at the blade, probably serving as a surgical knife or fleam. Copper alloy possible surgical implement. Cast elongated scoop, of flattened concavo-convex U profile with a tang or stem of sub-rectangular section, probably rounded by wear. Bent at the middle part of the scoop, possibly the result of post-depositional damage. This may be for either medical or veterinary purposes; the latter would perhaps commend a more recent date in the rural context of the find spot. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410. The rod shaped handle is circular in section with a complete terminal at one end and an old break at the other. It widens slightly from 5.0mm in diameter by the terminal to 5.8mm in diameter at the break. The complete terminal is composed of a rounded knop end, then a constriction to 3.5mm in diameter, then a raised narrow collar, then a broad oval bead, then a second narrow collar.
