A complete Medieval-Post Medieval cast copper alloy vessel, c. AD 1200-1700. The leg is broadly rectangular in plan and pentagonal in cross-section, narrowing slightly to a foot shape at the base. The foot has a rounded toe and there is a relief moulded line across the ankle.  The base of the foot is slightly worn and concave.  The top of the leg has a rough break where it has become detached from the original vessel. The leg is neatly finished and relatively thin suggesting that this may have come from a serving vessel, such as a ewer…

A fragment of a Medieval to Post-Medieval cast copper-alloy cooking vessel foot, c.AD 1300-1600. This is a foot from a cooking vessel, most likely a skillet given the slenderness of the foot and the likely lightness of the attached vessel. The foot is sub-circular and terminates in an oval sectioned foot section (flat at the back and on the underside). It tapers towards the broken upper edge that is curved where it would have attached to the vessel. Crudely made cast copper-alloy vessels such as cauldrons and skillets were widely used from c.1200-1700 for serving …

Description: An incomplete post medieval cast copper alloy (leaded bronze) cooking vessel fragment, most likely a skillet handle. The fragment consists of part of the handle and is flat and rectangular in profile, widening into a circular disc with a small round hole in the middle, which probably allowed the handle to be attached to the main part of the vessel. The fragment is undecorated. Dimensions: W: 47.05mm; L: 32.42mm; T: 1.71mm; Weight: 16.35g Discussion: A hanging skillet can be seen in Butler and Green's 'English Bronze Cooking Vessels and the…

An incomplete, probable handle or possible leg fragment from a Medieval/Post Medieval, cast, copper alloy cooking receptacle (skillet, jug or ewer). Narrow, slightly tapering sub-rectangular ridged handle with 'U' shaped cross-section. Three moulded longitudinal ridges with the largest close to the broken edge so another probable two ridges missing. The narrow end is rounded off, whereas the wider end concave and broken off from main body of the receptacle. A copper alloy pot leg. The find is roughly trapezoidal in profile with a broken terminal where the leg would have attached to the pot. The leg tapers to a roughly rounded foot, (shallow ‘m’ shaped in profile). The centre of the leg has a vertically running moulded rib on one face. The leg is likely medieval in date, and would have been part of a skillet or bowl.

Copper alloy skillet fragment, as kindly identified by Naomi Payne, who comments as follows: 'The decoration, curve and profile of this object all suggest it is a handle from a medieval posnet, not a Roman patera. Compare with for example no. 562 in Norwich Households (Margeson 1993, p. 90) and no. 187 in English Bronze Cooking Vessels and their Founders 1350-1830 (Butler and Green 2003, p. 174). Dating is c. 13th/14th century'. A slightly curving plano-convex straight-sided and lightly tapered fragment from a flat skillet handle, as kindly identified by the finder. Four double ring a…

Fragment of a medieval copper alloy skillet or posnet handle, the downturned proximal end with a punched double ring-and-dot on the upper face. This is probably the start of a line of ring-and-dot. Cf. an example dated to the mid 13th - mid 14th century (Butler and Green 2003, 174, no. 187), and one from the 1507 fire deposit in Norwich (Margeson 1983, no. 563). Extant length 45mm. The broken upper edge is slightly flared probably from when it was sheared off of the rest of the leg. Cast copper alloy receptacle leg, probably from a skillet or posnet, missing its foot. The leg is straight-sided and semi-circular in section, with slightly champfered sides on the back and a central rib running the length of the leg on the outer face. The leg tapers slightly to the point at which it is broken just above the foot. The foot does not appear to have been everted, but there is a notch in the metal on one side of the leg just above the point where the foot would have met the leg. An incomplete leg of a cast copper alloy skillet. The fragment is broken at both ends, straight sided in plan, D-shaped in section with a flat back and rounded front face, with five evenly spaced rounded ribs running down its length. The leg would have originally then been everted into a claw foot with five claws for stability. Butler & Green (2003) illustrate similar ribbed straight-sided skillet legs on page 140, fig.142, dating from 1658-1661, assigned to the Westcountry because of the similarity of the skillets to the work of Thomas Sturton's foundry in South Petherton, Somerse…
