An incomplete probable medieval copper-alloy "Octopus" type shield boss mount, dating from AD 1100-1250, of which only the central circular sectioned shank with a bulbous hemispherical terminal survives. The terminal dome has seven curved radiating grooves running from the centre to the circumference, with traces of a surface coating or inlay in the lines. The shaft has two swellings making it appear beaded, and then narrows where it could have fitted into the rest of the shield boss. The object has a green patina. The object is 37.1mm long and the top is …

A complete circular copper alloy mount, possibly from a shield of the Early Medieval period, about AD 500 - 650. It has triskele type design on the upper surface. The item is circular in plan and flat in cross section. Projecting from the centre of the reverse is a angled shank, about 6mm long, with a burred end. The front design comprises a central triangular shaped depression with three curved arms extending outwards, which is in the centre of a raised sub triangular three armed device consisting of three irregularly shaped wave-like extensions reaching to the border round the edge …

An incomplete, early medieval, iron, shield boss AD.500-650. The object comprises the upper portion of the boss dome, with incomplete discoidal projection. The boss is a waisted cone with the wider 'base' edge terminating in a ragged corroded edge, at the top of the cone point is the remains of a small disc. The edges of the dome have coroded and the overall state of the object is poor. Only approximately 25% of the original boss survives with the dome walls and flange lost to corrosion. Shield bosses are common finds in Early Medieval grave assemblages and it is likely this exa…

A badly corroded fragment of iron around 100m in length and 34mm in width, comprising an incomplete grip or strap handle from an early Medieval shield of 6th to 7th century AD date. The object is broken into two pieces. The grip comprises a flat piece of iron with a bifurcating terminal on one end with a pair of opposing looped lobes formed of curled tendrils of wrought iron, between which is a rivet fitting (second photo). The other end of the object appears to wrap around a portion of ferrugenised wood and possibly has a riveted attachment point. Found associated with a conical shie…

A fragment of a cast medieval copper-alloy "Octopus" shield boss mount, dating to the period AD 1100-1250. The fragment is a short section of one of the arms. In plan it is rectangular, and the fragment is "D" shaped in cross section with a central dome-headed rivet on the upper face. The strip is now bent into a U shape. One end is broken across a hole that would have housed a second rivet. The other end is bent over on itself, but appears to be complete. It flattens and widens to a lozenge shaped terminal with a circular hole in it presumably for another rivet. The reverse is flat …

Early medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) iron shield grip dating to c.AD 410-600 The shield grip is now in two pieces. It consists of a rectangular flat iron strip, hammered flat with expanded terminals, which are slightly convex but irregular due to corrosion, and pierced with two rivet holes with rivets still intact. The rivets have circular heads of 14.66 mm and 16.24 mm in diameter. This piece is classified as a short grip Type 1a1 according to Dickinson and Hines as the overall length is below 160 mm (Dickinson and Hines 1992, fig 17, p. 24). This type of grip is often found …

Iron possible shield fitting. A solid cylindrical object with part of an expanded or flanged top; broken recently at its narrower end. Possibly the detached top from a shield boss (cf. accompanying NLM-388C8D). The recent break would suggest the rest of the boss remains unrecovered, which would hint at the presence of two shield-equipped weapon burials in the same group of burials. These are uncommon across the kingdom of Lindsey as a whole. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 410-600 Height: 18.4mm, Diameter: 27.6mm, Weight: 36.50gms

Iron shield boss. Circular boss comprising, from the outer edge: a flat flange or edge of width 30mm; a central cone, which although curved within the hollow boss is carinated or indented on the outside with a recess of up to 7mm depth, and which rises in stages. Of these, the carinated part is c.20mm high, a conical top projects a further 55mm, and the carinated flat-topped top of the boss stands another 20mm proud with a diameter of 31mm – all these measurements being approximate given the corroded and encrusted state of the object. Over half the outer rim of the boss is lost, tho…

An incomplete early Anglo-Saxon iron shield boss. The boss is surmounted by a narrow-wasted rod in the centre (about 17mm long) which terminates in a circular disc (about 14mmin diameter) in the centre of the disc a flat triangular panel that could be the remains of a small silver plate. Below the rod, the cone has straight sloping sides and a diameter of about 90mm. The cone also appears to be thicker than normal but this maybe because of the limitations of the image and the lamination of the corroded iron. Below the cone, side walls would have extended down to the flanged ba…

Cast copper alloy mount from the apex of an Anglo-Saxon shield, subsequently reused as a brooch. The disc is decorated with chip-carved, Style I animal art. This is arranged around a central setting and three outer settings linked by plain, bow-sided, propeller-like bars to form three panels each of which contains a Style I animal. An apparently incomplete iron unidentified object, perhaps a strap handle, found close to HAMP-537475 and therefore of possible early early-medieval date (500-700). The object is sub-rectangular in shape with concave long edges. One (apparently complete) short end measures 23.8mm wide and is max.10.6mm thick (though it is likely this is largely corrosion). The opposite short end appears to be incomplete and measures 16.9mm in max.width and 2.9mm in thickness. At the centre (the narrowest point) it measures 14.8mm wide and 4.7mm thick. Its cross-section appears to be rectangular. It su…
