An Early Medieval pyramidal scabbard mount likely dating AD 500-700. The object was shaped like a four-sided pyramid with a flattened apex, though it is now bent inward on the front side. The reverse is hollow, except for a single, integral transverse bar that runs across the base. The mount is undecorated, very worn, and has a largely light green and light brown patina. Pyramidal sword mounts largely date from the 6th to 7th centuries. Whilst a large number are recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database, many of these are decorated. There are undecorated examples…

An incomplete, copper alloy dagger scabbard chape of late medieval date or early post-medieval date, about AD 1400 - 1600. It is formed from sheet copper alloy, rolled over to form a narrow, tapering tube. The lower end of the tube has been divided into three, forming triangular tabs which have been folded over to create a closed lower end with a blunt point. Where the ends of the rolled sheet of alloy meet they are overlapped and there is a single, longitudinal seam. There is a rivet hole near the broken upper end of the chape. The chape has a light green patina. It is 20.1m…

Incomplete front or rear plate from a medieval copper-alloy sword scabbard chape. It is a single sheet, mostly flat, with five original edges: a pair of broadly straight and parallel side edges, an upper a concave edge and, at the bottom, a pair of straight oblique edges which would probably have converged on a rounded point but are now interrupted by a transverse worn break. All edges apart from the top and the break curve a little more than a millimetre rearward (or forward if this is a rear plate). Some edges are split and more heavily abraded than others. One lo…

Medieval to post-medieval scabbard chape formed from copper alloy sheet with an overlapping soldered seam which has been pulled apart towards the mouth.
